The alternating lead vocals between the forceful, aggressive delivery of David Ruffin and the sweet, sensual falsetto of Eddie Kendricks marked an interesting transistion in their work. David Ruffins voice mostly sounded seemingly angst ridden especially on the magnificent, (I Know) I'm Losing You.
Other than Smokey Robinson, a large portion of their work was produced by Norman Whitfield. What Whitfield encapsulated with his work with The Temptations was blending late 60's trends of Pop and Funk into this groups output, giving it a healthy balance and therefore making The Temoptations strong innovators with their music.

Advantages: Re-working of old songs, emotional stuff Disadvantages: A few don't work so well this way, rather sad
...Keith Caputo first made his name fronting New York hardcore band, Life Of Agony. Some people, trying to heighten the contrast between them and his later work, make out like they were Amen or something. The truth is that Life Of Agony got progressively mellower, such that by their third and final album with Keith, Soul Searching Sun [1997], they were able to produce the commercial post-grunge single 'Weeds'.
Anyway, Keith soon left the band (to be briefly replaced by ex-Ugly Kid Joe frontman Whitfield Crane) and spent some time working on a solo release, Died Laughing. In hindsight, you can see it coming, but at the time it was still something of a shock. Gone with all the angst and musical heaviness, he'd produced an album heavy only in the emotional/lyrical sense, but that was very much a typical singer-songwriter fare, closer to David...
