...a way to express this to him other than playing the old songs for him. I was 15 at the time.”

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK:
Alan Block’s sandal shop in the shadows of Washington Square Park near the crossroads of hip, Bleeker and McDougal Streets, was a meeting place for Village types, especially musicians.
The likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Stefan Grossman and John Sebastian would hang out at Block’s and pick and sing with House, the Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt and Bukka White, to name just a few of the blues men who came through the shop. (A New Yorker myself, in high school at the time, I only went there once, but the day I popped in Al Kooper , the musical genius behind the first and only worthwhile -- pre-David Clayton Thomas -- incarnation of “Blood, Sweat and Tears” was in the store. Advantages: Oh my, too many to list. Disadvantages: Absolutly none.
...Jose padilla has done it again, brought such diverse tracks together in harmony to make us lesser mortals feel good about everything. This sadly was to be Jose's last compilation in the cafe del mar series, as i have said before, this is where i stopped buying these cd's. Advantages: The first Moody Blues concept album. Is this what started prog rock? Disadvantages: Perhaps a little dated - but it is 40 years old!
.... I have my SACD player on order!!
THE PRESENTATION
The two disc set is housed in a fold-out "Digipak" style enclosure. For additional protection there is a plastic sleeve printed with the mantra "Deluxe Edition". The front cover reproduces the pop art painting by David Anstey On the back and inside are photographs of the members of the band as well as the track listing of both discs.
The accompanying 20 page booklet contains a history of the band and the album along with more photographs from the time. There is no songbook. The second half gives an indication of the source of the tracks on the bonus disc.
If you haven't listened to the Moody Blues then this is an ideal place to start. Is the new version worth the extra money (the old CD is still available)? Yes it is. Funnily enough (having bought one anyway!!) I think...
