When this movie was on The Disney Channel, me and my family were not able to watch it. We did'nt have the Disney Channel and my kids were desperate to watch it as it was the talk of the school. So I had to Have the DVD and the day it came out I bought it and it was amazing, I loved it it was so good. I did expect the cheesy disney movie norm, but Boy! was I wrong.
Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) are with their parents at a ski resort for the New Years Eve holiday. While going to the party, they are forced together for karaoke and discover that they sing beautifully together. They both go their different ways but then Gabriella transfers into Troy's high school and are reunited by Zac using his phone to call Gabriella. The school has and audition for a school musical, but Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) Evans are the stars of the show they always audition with a well coriagraphed dance and sing routine that is over the top for an auditions. Gabriella wants to audition for the musical, but no-body would sing with her until the Troy volunteers.
The auditions are over, but drama teacher Mrs. Darbus (Alyson Reed) accidently hears them singing the song to the show's composer Kelsi (Olesya Rulin) and puts them on the list for a callback. This puts Sharpay and Ryan into a panic when Troy's name is on the callback list. This also throws the school into chaos since everyone has to stay in their clique and Troy is a star basketball player crossing over into drama geek territory violates those unwritten rules. The fact that Troy's dad Coach Bolton (Bart Johnson) is Mrs. Darbus' enemy and is angry with his son for missing practices to rehearse for the musical. Chad (Troy's best friend) teams up with Gabriella's new friend Taylor (Monique Coleman) to scheme a solution to keep Troy on the basketball team and Gabriella in her the math club competition team. Their cause both Troy and Gabriella to suffer. They work things out but the evil Sharpay changes the callbacks to be at the same day and time as the big basketball game and math competition.
I don't think that the Disney Channel were aware of the potential that the film would have, getting a woping viewer estimate of 24 million people. They repeated the film in many different versions, a sing along version (on the DVD) and a dance along version. They also use the show's stars in promotions, commercials, etc. High School Musical is presented in fullscreen as it was shown on television.
Special features include two music videos, located under the "Music and more" option on bonus features menu. "I can't take my eyes off of you" is listed as never viewed before and has the main cast performing the track in a studio. "We're all in this together" is the following one and is created of clips from the show.
Under the "Backstage Disney" there is a 9 minute featurette called "Bringing it all Together: the making of High School Musical." including interviews with actors Ashley Tisdale, Zac Efron, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, director/choreographer Kenny Ortega, associate choreographers Bonnie Story and Charles Klapow and basketball technical director Rob Lafallet.
There is another featurette called "Learning the Moves" where Ortega, Story, Klapow, Tisdale and Grabeel show dance moves. Finalizing the DVD's special features there are Disney sneak peaks trailers.
I very much enjoyed the production, and the second movie is kind of the same but the whole idea is original and really loveable songs.

It is a good review, but unfortunately you've placed it under the category meant for reviews of the soundtrack, not the film. If you ask Ciao to move this for you and let me know when it's done, I'll re-rate.
