Fairport convention began life back in 1967, and sine then have had as complicated a history as Whitsanke/Deep Purple, Rainbow and all the other in that set. Their line up has over the years included some of the great names of folk: Ashley Hutchins, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, and John Kirkpatrick, (but never all at the same time sadley.)having started life during the great sixies folk revival, they like other bands have mixed traditional music with electric modernity, and have done so to great effect.
The istory of Fairport Convention is an album that seeks to capture their different sounds and line ups over the years, and as such is an admirable effort to do the almost impossible. This a good introductory album for anyone who has not previously encounered the group, and as a first foray into folk it would certainly be a good choice.
The album contains a couple of traditional songs, but the vast majority are written by band members. I'll outline what each song is like.
Meet on the Ledge- an anthum for folk, excellent and catchy. Fotheringay - Mellow song with Sandy Denny's sweet voice. Mr Lacey - a Hutchings song, rather rude and blusey. Book Song - Richard Thompson, sounds very sixties. Sailor's life - traditional and lively. Si Tu Dois Partir - Dylan song, lots of French, again lively and catchy. Who knows were the time goes? - anothr haunting song, melancholy. Matty Groves - Traditional tale of love, adultery and death. Now be Thankful - uplifitng and the sort of thing you'd want to sing with lots of other people. Walk Awhile - cheery, written by Swarbrick/Thompson Sloth - another Thompson/Swarbrick,simple melody, thoughtful lyrics. Bonny Black Hare - traditional, lively and laden with inuendo. Angel delight -showing the rock influences and very energetic. Bridge Over the River Ash - fiddle instrumental. John Lee - Written by Swarbrick, not much tune but a lot of energy. Breakfast in Mayfair- more rock influences, modern tale, old issues. Hanging song - a great song about a man waiting to die. The Hen's march/ the four poster bed - the most amazing fiddle playing you will ever hear.
Watch out because my cd doesn't have "Crazy Man Michael" while some tape versions do. This is an amazing song, so it's worth looking out a version with it on.
On the whole a great and mostly mellow album, good for sumer evenings and chilling out with a bottle of wine.

One of the finest moments of modern British Folk music. Fairport Convention has a lot of collectors in Germany, I prefer the period with Sandy Denny. But also the (Jefferson Airplane reminding) debut in 1967 with the unknown female singer .... Time will show the wiser ... Tomas

Shame that the CD has been cut to shreds - I taped from a friend the orignal vinyl (2 vinyls, if I recall), and they have really the whole representative canon up until the point it was made. Sigh. Cheers, Kate
