Advantages: The 6 number 1 records Disadvantages: The rest of the tracks are rubbish
. Finally after 7 tracks we get something from the 70's! From 1974 it was #3 in the UK but only #4 in the US R&B Charts despite being classed as a soul song, so yes it was a hit but no it wasn't disco.
8. Going Back To My Roots - Odyssey. From 1981 and it was more popular in the UK than anywhere else as it was #4, its best in America was #55 on the US Dance Charts. What you might not know (and I certainly didn't until today) was theirs was a cover version of Lamont Doziers 1977 funk original. Oh and his version is better than theirs.
9. So Many Men So Little Time - Miquel Brown. From 1983 and produced by Ian Levine, the same guy who wrote and produced High Energy. This track was actually the 1st creation in the HI-NRG club music genre made in an attempt to prove disco wasn't dead. According to Ian Levines Youtube entry it was #1 pop in ...
Advantages: 18 number 1's! Disadvantages: Some of the tracks are a bit crap
Music was very hit & miss during the 1990's, I must admit I didn't care for very much released during the decade but occasionally got caught up in the hype of a few songs now and then. Primarily for me I spent the 1990's protecting the free world (6 years in the RAF) as well as listening to 80's music although enjoyed some of the electronica offered by the rave & acid scene at the time.
This album is a collection of 39 tracks all of which were in the UK charts above the top 5 position. Its 2 cds (with 20 tracks on CD1 & 19 tracks on CD 2), all chart positions are UK Singles Chart positions.
So whats on the album?
Disc: 1
1. Discotheque - U2 (was #1, 1997)
To be honest this wasn't one of U2's better songs but fan power got it to the #1 spot.
2. Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williams (was #3, 1998)
Probably one of Robbie best known ...
Advantages: Fab price; Far better tracklisting than most 70s compilations; Loads of classics! Disadvantages: The odd 'filler track' and uninspiring liner notes.
Hits70s was the first in the series I purchased and I can safely say the compilers know their music and have done a fantastic job in highlighting most of the music styles that pervaded throughout the UK charts during the decade. For the 70s fan wishing to reminisce or the music lover looking to expand their collection, this boxset is ideal. However, for those who view 70s music as simply disco, ABBA, Queen and Status Quo, look at other titles in the 100 Hits series or one of a number of other 70s compilations on the market that only feature the usual suspects. This boxset is perfect for those who want to get away from buying a compilation with the same old stuff.
"Disc 1" is for me by far the strongest and could easily be left on continual play at any house party. I would go as far to say that Disc 1 alone makes owning this boxset a must ...
