Collins sold out completely when Peter Gabriel left Genesis in the early 70s and should have stuck to being a decent drummer than a third-rate solo artist.
This is uniformly bland, over-produced, middle-of-the-road rubbish.
Another Day in Paradise (1989)- a patronising attempt to show what a sensitive chap Collins is, by highlighting poverty. Poverty of ideas more like - it contains the lines "Oh think twice, its another day for / You and me in paradise / Oh think twice, its just another day for you, / You and me in paradise" - that's all right for millionaire rock star Phil Collins to say. This track reeks of hypocrisy.
True Colours - if this wasn't "pass me the bucket" sick-making enough, True Colours is a terribly saccharine love song - I see your true colours / so don't be afraid to let them show / your true colours, just like a rainbow". More insultingly badly hack writing here (not from Collins himself, so he can't be blamed for that), but he can be blamed for releasing this trash into the public domain.
Then, its "Easy Lover", - "She's an easy lover / She'll take your heart but you won't feel it / She's like no other / Before you know it you'll be on your knees" - a slight improvement on the first two tracks, but still middle-of-the-road, bland, unimaginative, radio-friendly muzak.
"You can't hurry love" - a jaunty track this one with sing along lyrics. "You can't hurry love, 'cos love has to wait, just trust in a good time, now matter how long it takes - Now break!" - had dance floors filling in the early nineties, which is where it should have remained. - Again, Collins didn't write this himself, so he can't be blamed for the appallingly dull lyrics.
Then it is pass the sick bucket time again for the dreadful "Two Hearts". More sentimental, love-sick, forgettable nonsense.
"Against All Odds" is a half-decent track. "Take a look at me now / There's just an empty space" is a nice line, which does convey some genuine emotion. The only other listenable song on the album is Sussudio, which is genuinely catchy and hummable.
This is an exception, as Collins's songs are generally catchy in the same way as the 'flu. They are painful to listen to for any length of time, make you feel sick and incapable of doing anything except wondering about how awful everything is.
All the songs on this compilation are very forgettable love songs, without a trace of originality - far from the ambitious beginnings of Collins's career as a drummer in Genesis (before they all sold out completely and chased the lure of commercial success rather than the lure of good music). Successful bands like Pink Floyd and Radiohead have demonstarted that you can be ambitious, long-lasting and have some artistic integrity. Phil Collins fails miserably to satisfy on this collection.
There is no point in buying this - you will probably know all the tracks already and even if you don't all you need do is go down to the nearest Sainsbury's to listen to fine selection of Collins's muzak played from the speakers.
The thing that really boggles belief is that Phil Collins - a fine drummer who is a talented musician - wasted years of his life churning out this pap. Maybe he was too busy counting the money to care.
