They get the album going with one of their biggest tracks and one that gave them the chance to break away into the mainstream with material that has them moving the general Electronica sound towards something that fits in with the styles that were prominent in the contemporary Drum & Bass scene and they achieved it effectively (although the synth at the breakdown wasn’t really that impressive).

3. “Plasticworld”
I saw this one as an improvement on the last for the fact that it took things further down towards where the Drum & bas world was at during this time and it doesn’t seem just as keen to give it the chance to fit in with the expectations of others (who don’t really need to be catered for). You get some chill-out stuff mixed in with some weighty kickdrums for pretty big tune that I can’t really see any issues with whatsoever.

4. “Fasten Your Seatbelts”
Here you get a collaboration piece with The Freestylers for a pretty strong tune. I found that although I did enjoy it, the Breakbeats are lost here sand so they go for some more conventional Electronica with this one. However you found that there is an interesting integration of the Drum & bass elements through things that were made particularly important as Jungle immerged alongside it.

5. “Through The Loop”
Sampling snippets from ‘Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory’ you see that here you get a raw jam that has them appealing to popular things that you tend to get in a lot of Drum & bass material time, but with such a popular reference used to assist, it makes it even more impactful as they come in with one of the heaviest breakdowns on the whole of the release to show that they can compete.

6. “Sounds Of Life”
The heavy beats appear to come through on this one too, although this is another that finds them attempting to break away from the typical musical directions a little as they get Jasmine Yee of Halogen to come and provide some vocals over the thing to give it a mellow mood as they lay down another standard break. It is rather uneventful and can be ignored quite easily as it is nothing more than average.

7. “Girl In The Fire”
This is a track that really I doubt I would have liked had it not got the type of exposure that Pendulum are able to receive as you find that here you get a track that uses more of the hardcore Drum & bass stuff mixed in with the kind of off-putting synth that doesn’t really sit too well in the Drum & bass world (and was phased out in the UK especially for its connotations to styles which don’t fit in as well with it. However after a while it all falls into place here.

8. “Tarantula”
Had this track not been overplayed, this would be the best on the album and completely out-do any other recording that they’ve done before (and are likely to do again based on the sound of their second album). Here they appeal to the Junglists and go right in with this remix to the track of the same name and essentially rip it. There’s no a single things wrong with this track, although it should have stayed in the underground for its power to be truly felt (as its heavy play has hurt it massively).

9. “Out Here”
You find that they come off the last one and into this one with an apparent rethink of where they wish to take the album as they bring out a tune that has them moving back towards the freedom of Electronica (which can be taken anywhere musically) and do very well with this funky jam that completely took me by surprise and showed me just how far they can twist expectations to come up with the goods. It is infectious and you are bound to enjoy it for all it offers.

10. “Hold Your Colour”
This is a very distinctive track on the album and one that I felt like a good choice to represent the album by (as its titular joint) and you find that in it you get a track that may not be the best on the album, but is one that has them bringing something that appears to round-up all the sorts of things that you get here with a fly little mix-up of what has made up the most impressive side of this debut release.

11. “The Terminal”
I felt as though a lift came as this one powered through and you find that you get a jam that has them pulling out the most impactful stuff that they seem to have been holding back a little on elsewhere on the release. It really does the business here as you see that they built it all up gradually, as any good Drum & bass track should and they take you into their world to make the breakdown that little bit more satisfying.

12. “Streamline”
This track pulls things down again as you see that after showing the act coming up to their highest standards, you see that they go into one side of Drum & bass that they clearly haven’t been able to master yet as they go for a chill-out track and do it in a strange way with extra trips in the breaks to prevent it from actually having its relaxing qualities come through. I felt as though it was a wasted track, but I can see why they tried.

13. “Another Planet”
They somehow pull it back for this one as they do more of the spacey stuff, and get us away from the kind of stuff that seems far too predictable and uneventful. In doing so they get another chance to display their abilities at creating a full and complete atmosphere to base their music around in order to make for one that makes you feel as though everything is right and you can connect with it in every way.

14. “Still Grey”
The album ends with a calming track, and so seems like the perfect musical direction to go with as they bring their debut to a close, however I can’t say that I really feel this end of Drum & bass that much, never mind when these do it and so I can’t say that I really that bothered once I knew where they were taking it, but I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy it by the end as it was a very satisfying track to end on.

Although I could see clear weaknesses in this, for a commercial Drum & Bass album it is a reasonably strong one and one that gives you the chance to feel a pretty wide spectrum of what the genre can offer, although missing out on the darker end that I feel makes for the best results.

HOLD YOUR COLOUR (5:28)
At least they spelt colour correctly. Fair enough that wouldn't annoy me in a club as I'd never know but I own the CD so its a big thing. I've come to expect a lot from title tracks over the years. Not too many Drum n Bass albums have them so if you're going to then its a big thing. Luckily this is actually quite a good, if generic, DnB tune. Its a gift for those of us that can't dance as everything ... ...I'm watching some nature program on mute and the two lobsters fighting seem to be fighting in time with this. A dancefloor filler. Its a really tight tune with some lovely vocals. This one would do well in the charts as a tune in its own right. No love of DnB needed.

Tracks like "Slam" have proved popular on the UK club scene, and I feel it really demonstrates what Pendulum are all about. Along with Prelude, it is a excellent start to the album and sets the tone for the rest.
There are also tracks like "Plasticworld" and "Hold Your Colour", which maintain a fast paced beat, but are much calmer to listen ... ...a rest!
The last track "Still Grey" I feel shows the listener what the album is all about - fast paced at times, but ambient and calmer at other points.
All in all, this is an excellent album. I would recommend this to any drum 'n' bass fan, or any dance music fan looking for an energetic album to get the blood pumping. ...

Advantages: Drum and Bass Album of the Year 2005 I'd say! Disadvantages: 14 Tracks
I read about this album on the internet the day before I was leaving the UK and I got it while in a rush to catch my flight at a virgin store at Gatwick airport, I was so excited about getting on the plane and listening to it as I had heard a few of the songs before!
There are so many hits on this album: some which you see on TV and others which you hear at clubs and on the radio, these include:
-Slam (entertaining music video!)
-Girl in the Fire ... ...Colour
-Another Planet (which I think got track of the year)
Pendulum really showed their skills in this album as the songs are so technical and detailed not like typical drum and bass. I found that my friends who are not into drum and bass really enjoyed most of the songs on this CD.
But if you are a drum and bass fan, then this album is a must! ...

Advantages: Very cleverly constructed, and very pleasing sound Disadvantages: Cover / Inlay Design and Content does not reflect the rest of the album.
Everybody knows the Pendulum vs. Fresh mashup known on the underground as "Tarantula" or "Black Tarantula", and in many ways, this song alone inspired me to buy this album. Drum 'n' Bass & Break Beat are not my primary loves in music, and I can't stand alot of artists in the game, who churn out tracks with the same old beat, and , whilst i find sometimes myself dancing along to the same old drum, Penulum does not follow the rules.

...one of my faves was hold your colour, with a completly diffrent pace to tracks like your fasten your seatbelt its more of a chilled track with alot more lyrics than thier other songs. pendulum together as a band display an amazing use of musical talent which they show in all thier songs. a generally feel good album for first buyers of drum and bass and still a excellent album with some mind blowing and interesting tracks. ...

I first got this album in August of last year after searching for it all over the high street.
I eventually managed to get it on Amazon for about Ten pounds.
I achully came across Pendulum completely by accident,as I loved a song called 'Tarantula' by D.J HYPE and after Google Videoing it,I discovered that Pendulum had also released it and I gave a few of their songs a listen.
I was especially taken by a song called 'Blood Sugar' and decided to get the album 'HoldyourColour'.
'HoldyourColour' is the debut album from Australian Drum n Bass set 'Pendulum',its achully a re-release and the album I have contains two different songs to the original album.
Each song is extremely different to the next and they average a running time of 5 minutes each,there are 14 tracks.

HoldYourColour is the debut album by Australian DnB group Pendulum. Realeased 25th July 2005, it gave Pendulum worldwide fame and they were loved by hardcore DnB fans and people new to the scene alike.
When i first bought this album i was a little skeptical of how good it would be.
After first hearing "Another Planet", which still remains possibly the greatest song i have EVER heard, i was intruiged as to how they would be able to make a whole album like this without it sounding a bit 'samey', for use of a better word.
I was pleasantly surprised.
2 months on and this CD hasn't left my CD player. There is at least 1 song for you on this album no matter what mood you're in.
It is the only album i own where each song is as good as the one that followed it, if not better.
The songs also vary quite dramatically.

These guys are amazing!...I heard one of their songs on a Music channel and I thought I'd try their album!
It's Fantastic!...the sounds these guys produce is immense.
The prelude flows seamlessly into track 2 "Slam" and tells an incredible story.
Track "Through the loop" Great intro and a really heavy bass sound!
Tracks such as Holdyourcolour blew my mind.
Tarantula...a great collaboration with $pyda!
These guys produce some amazing sounds, mixtures of distortion, heavy bass beats and some incredible drum work really come together to make some sounds you'll almost certainly not be able to help yourself raving to. This stuff just gets you moving! whether you can help it or not!
If you like groups such as Prodigy or Sub-focus...you'll love these guys. ...
