Additional notes
Album Notes: This 1998 album finds Jimmy Scott fearlessly reinterpreting a range of love songs that were written for or by rock acts during the last twenty years. As always, to listen Jimmy Scott sing is to let the rest of the world disappear. His choice of Elvis Costello's \"Almost Blue\" is a natural one. More surprising--but no less appropriate--is his take on Bryan Ferry's \"Slave to Love.\" Though Scott recorded versions of a handful of contemporary songs on 1996's HEAVEN (the title track is a Talking Heads' song), this album is entirely devoted to exploring the interpretive possibilities in contemporary songwriting. HOLDING BACK THE YEARS features a small jazz combo and occasional strings, and sounds warm and lush throughout.
Album Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (1/22-1/29/99, p.105) - \"...Forsaking his usual standards for rock-era pop by Elvis Costello, John Lennon, Prince, and others, Scott occasionally tips into melodrama while the producers nod. But when the magic happens, that voice ushers you into a secret sitting room of the heart, and you won't think of saying no.\" - Rating: B

HOLDINGBACK THE YEARS 4:30
“I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Nothing ever could yeah”
Definitely the most soulful track on this album, and perhaps even the most well known Simply Red song, the lyrics are quite stunning. The music in parts feels almost classical and the strength of Hucknall’s voice and its extended range from the highest to lowest notes is complimented well by it. It reminds me of the passage of time and how wisdom is borne of experience. One of my favourite tracks. My rating 10/10.

Advantages: Great introduction to a songwriting genius Disadvantages: Will not be to everybody's taste
...Jimmy Webb was, and to some degree still is an enigma. In the 60's when he was just starting to perfect his craft he created some of the most brilliantly constructed tunes around. The tradegy is that he is also one of the most overlooked songwriters of his generation.
Jimmy wrote his first song ('Up, Up & Away') whilst still in college. Over the course of the next ten years he would be rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Beatles, Richard Harris and a whole host of other 60's icons.
There is one story he tells about possibly his most famous composition, MacArthur Park, that gives some indication of just how important he was back in the day. The song, sung in unique style by the aforementioned Richard Harris (they went on to record two albums of music together), was a huge beast of a thing, full of unusual segments of different...

...the label, but instead of lying down and giving up, they worked even harder, touring all over the world, building up a fan base and writing material for an album.
The band were finally picked up by Dreamworks Records and finally got the chance to unleash their new album on the world.
The band hold Blink 182 as one of their biggest fans, in fact Tom from Blink 182 actually got the band to perform at his wedding as he first started dating his future wife at a Jimmy Eat World gig.
