Scar Symmetry released their new album Holographic Universe on Nuclear Bast in June, 2008. The album cover looked like a mixture of a horror and a sci-fi film! This is the 3rd release of the Swedish metal band and they have outdone the superb work on their previous albums with what is a magnificient recording.
The vocals as well as the sound have been cleaned up, whilst some tracks still feature a bit of grunting, it's clear grunting - so you can make out what is actually being said. Then Lars Palmqvist comes in with clean vocals that sound like they are out of 1980's US power metal band. Since this album the grunting Alvestam has left the band and been replaced by Robert Karlsson. The band retain all of their brutality and aggression whilst adding more of a melodic sound on top. For me though, the clean vocals are unnecessary, whilst it might make the band more saleable, it sounds to whiney in comparison to the music. Palmqvist's range is poor but with a "my trousers are tight" sound to them - so the resulting sound is a bit of a mess in my eyes. The album is supposedly based on tbe novel The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot and several tracks feature direct quotations.

Album Notes
Personnel: Christian Alverstam (vocals); Jonas Kjellgren, Per Nilsson (guitars); Kenneth Seil (bass guitar); Henrik Ohlsson (drums). To the layperson, "complex and intelligent" may not be what comes to mind when someone mentions death metal, but then those people have probably never heard Scar Symmetry. Their third album, HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE, manages to push both the heaviness and the melodic content of previous releases even further, showcasing smarter songwriting without sacrificing the crunch. By incorporating cookie monster vocals with more operatically sung techniques, Scar Symmetry has the best of both worlds. Epics such as the massive "Artificial Sun Projection" have more in common with Dream Theater than with Morbid Angel, but they still open up the throttle on a track like "The Missing Coordinates."
