This is profoundly distressing on first listen. I hated it at first - thinking 'Where are the melodies?' - but after studying the lyrics I came to the conclusion that this is the greatest album ever recorded. It is, of course, the 'Richey Album'. 'Quiet guitarist' Richey James Edwards wrote most of the lyrics shortly before being hospitalised for depression and self-harm. Six months after the album was released, Richey went missing and it is believed that he killed himself.
The subjects of the harrowing songs include death, America, prostitution, eating disorders, drugs, truth, and the Nazi Holocaust.
The Manics released two albums before The Holy Bible (and several after), but their cult following (mainly consisting of Goth wannabes) has raised this record to near-mythical status.

The Holy Bible is the quintiseential Manics album. Buy it now, rather than wait for the "Oh they were good, shame they split up" articles that are already being written ready for publication in early 2003.
