Sherlock Holmes - a pleasant surprise

Advantages: Good performances, fast pace, very enjoyable
Disadvantages: The baddie could have been a bit more evil!

As a big fan of both Robert Downey Jr and Arthur Conan Doyle?s Sherlock Holmes stories, when I heard that Downey Jr was to play the illustrious detective I was excited but a little surprised by the choice. Upon hearing that the film was to be directed by Guy Ritchie, I prepared myself for the worst. I don?t hate his films but they are all very similar and a bit ?style over substance? for my liking and I couldn?t see how his style would do justice to the great detective stories. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It was thoroughly enjoyable and Ricthie?s style actually worked quite well with the story. He managed to capture the grimness of the criminal underworld of Victorian London really well but retained a wit and humour that was actually very true to Conan Doyle?s stories. Forensic Holmes?

Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: Not sure about Everett, weak story, set in the wrong period

Sherlock Holmes is fast succumbing to his drug habit when a new case takes his interest, and, with the help of Dr Watson, he manages to pull himself together enough to work on the case. A number of girls from wealthy families are going missing, later found dead. All the girls appear to be young and innocent, yet someone obviously wants them wiped off the face of the earth. Then one young girl manages to survive the kidnap. Can she lead Holmes and Watson to the murderer? And will the latest forensic advances help them on their way? Since I was a child, I have loved Sherlock Holmes stories, whether on screen or in printed book form. I am, however, rather choosy when it comes to who plays Sherlock Holmtes. Sherlock Holmes kicks butt

Advantages: Entertaining from start to finish, great performances
Disadvantages: It's not the Holmes we know

Having caught the evil Lord Blackwood, the serial killer and dabbler in the dark arts, Sherlock Holmes is bored. He hasn't left his room for two weeks and best friend Doctor John Watson is desperate to get Holmes out of the house again. Then Blackwood, sentenced to death by hanging, requests a visit from Holmes, although it is unsure why. Blackwood is hanged and is pronounced dead by Watson. Much to his surprise then, Blackwood is then rumoured to have come back from the dead and Holmes is asked to find Blackwood by the members of a secret order, who fear for their lives. Two members of the order are later killed and Holmes and Watson realise that Blackwood really is still alive. Can they trace him and prevent him from committing more murders?
