The notes of HOMAGE TO MAHATMA ,was composed on the spot by Ravi Shankar while taking part in a Radio broadcast, soon after MAHATMA GANDHI was assasinated in 1948,but the music was recorded much later in the 70's..and the album made 10 years later in 1981.

This is Hindustani Classical music at its best. One cant hope for anything better than this. The masters have come together to give us a musical feast in this magnificent album, which mesmerises listeners

The Details of the Performers

Ravi Shankar (sitar); Mrs. Jaban, Mrs. Widya, Prodyot Sen, Sunil
Kumar (tanpura); Alla Rakha (tabla).

MUSIC BASED ON
Raga Mohan Kaunus, Raga Gara and Tala farodast

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON THE HINDUSTANI CLASSICAL MUSIC
(:various sources)

Classical music Of The Sub-continent

There have been many styles of Classical music developed by different families reffered to as "Gharaana".They have developed different styles of classical music, genres and instruments, that have evolved over a period of time.

And as Human civilisation progressed the music became complicated and more meanigful and senitive.
There were poems of Love,Pain,Seperation,Nature,Beauty, and all other things that are around us and, have become meaningful to human beings.

The first known theory of music in Indian Vedas (Samveda) contains four notes. The combination of several notes woven into a composition in a way, which is pleasing to the ear, is called a "Raga". The raga is an Indian scale which utilizes varying ascending and descending patterns.

Each raga creates an atmosphere, which is associated with feelings and sentiments. Any stray combination of notes cannot be called a Raga. At a more academic level, it is a musical composition that functions within a structure and follows certain rules with relation to the kind of notes used in it.

Raga is the dictator of melody in Indian Clssical Music
Two ragas may have identical notes and yet are unmistakably different in structure and temperament.

Music flourished in India under Muslim rule and was subject to a number of new influences, including those of the mystic Sufi sect. As a consequence new elements, forms and instruments came to be introduced into Indian Music. The Classical music became richer with all these cross cultural influences.

The sitar and the tabla also belong to this period. ..

It was during this phase that two separate systems emerged as a result of the Islamic influence on the existing system in Northern and central India while the south remained relatively free from this domination. This led to the emergence of two forms of Indian Music namely Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian).

The British rule in India influenced Music further with the introduction of Violin, and poetry gained importance, with the use of music to promote nationalism during the freedom struggle...

The twentieth century also saw the arrival of Indian cinema, which further popularized music among common man. The early years of Indian Film music was dominated by Classical songs and Classically trained singers.

The post independence period saw classical Indian music gaining global recognition.
"Ravi Shankar" one of the greatest players of the Sitar, worked with the Beatles while "Ali Akbar Khan" popularized the Sarod in the west. The twentieth century also saw collaborations between Indian and western musicians. such as Ravi Shankar and "Yehudi Menuhin". This merging of two streams of music is often referred to as fusion Music.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
It was released in 1981, though it was composed much earlier in 1948.
The performance begins with RAGA MOHAN KAUNS, goes on to explore RAGA GARA to the final piece Tala ...Talas are the rhythmic structures of Indian classical music, and the final piece is an exploration of TALA FARODAST by the Great Alla Rakha, one of the finest Tabla players...The total performance by the masters ,leaves you spellbound

This Great Classical Album is a winner all the way
