Dixie Chicks strip off the star-making gloss of Nashville and get down to the meat of the matter, turning out an acoustic record that gives a big Texas howdy to bluegrass. But that's only the framework they use to salute all their influences, from the raggedy rock of Little Feat (on Darrell Scott's irresistible "Long Time Gone") to the pained ballads of Stevie Nicks (covering her melancholy "Landslide") to the confessional Texas singer-songwriters who straddle the country-folk line (Patty Griffin, Bruce Robison). Maines's raw, irrepressible soprano remains a thing of wonder, as do the threesome's exquisite harmonies, which seem tighter and more organic than ever before. Still, the jaw-dropping thrills come from the passionate and masterful picking of Emily Robison on banjo, bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton and Adam Steffey, whose fluid mandolin does Bill Monroe proud. Home, the Chicks' first release on their own record label, puts the front porch back into mainstream music, whatever the genre. And not a minute too soon. --Alanna Nash

7 More Love.
**********
This track showed me just how beautiful and melodic the dobro can be in the right hands and in Emily’s hands it rings out true and as crystal clear as a bell on a clear calm night. Backed by strong emotional vocals from Natalie it tells of how easy it is for things, simple ... ...
8 I Believe in Love.
***************
Written by the Chicks, this track featured on the live “Tribute to Heroes” telethon in America for the victims of the September 11th massacre. The Dixie’s have long been vocal in their condemnation of the action. The track itself is slow and melancholy featuring many close harmonies and a stunning solo by Martie playing the fiddle.
I really don’t like Country and Western music much, well ok I admit it I do like some. Well lets face it most of us at sometime or another will have heard and enjoyed one of the modern classics such as Johnny Cash with his “Boy Named Sue” or perhaps a better one, Dolly Partons “I will always Love You” which was covered by Whitney Houston and used as the theme to “The Bodyguard and one of my personal favourites “Duelling Banjos” from the film Deliverance.
Now as happens so often in my life fate stepped in and showed its hand. I’ll explain, one night while reading through Ciao’s top twenty I came across a glowing review by Newfloridian on an album by an American trio that up until that moment I had never heard of. I was intrigued and went across to Amazon to see what tracks they had to offer for listening to. They are only partial tracks but what I heard I liked so going one step further over to Kazza I went and downloaded a couple of tracks and do you know what I was hooked by the time the first song was over. More tracks followed both audio and video until one day out shopping and looking for an escape from the tedium so I ventured into Virgin while my wife was elsewhere and found to my delight that they had one album in stock by the girls, that album was Home. Needless to say after overcoming the initial shock I paid the money, almost £16 and my love affair began.
So what do I get for the money apart from an ear bashing for wasting money, I’ll tell you shall I, you get an album that is totally addictive, one that is continuously played, one that my daughters eight and thirteen sing along to and they know all the words, so let me share this with you and see if I cant tempt you as I guide you through the play list on this remarkable album, but first of all let me set the scene by introducing you to the girls.
The Dixie Chicks are three girls from Texas, namely Natalie Maines, vocals and guitar. Sisters Emily Robison, Dobro and banjo and Martie Maguire fiddle and mandolin.
1 Long Time Gone. *************** Perhaps this track is more of traditional country than any of the other vocals. Featuring an up tempo accompaniment from Emily on banjo it tells the tale of young farmer who leaves his parents farm to escape marriage and tedium.
2 Landslide. ********* This is one of the tracks that I downloaded from Kazza, it is a cover of a song written and recorded by my favourite singer, the beautiful Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. The Dixie’s make this one their own, it is one of the best cover versions I have ever heard, and if you get the chance watch the video it’s excellent. I would in honesty find it difficult to say which version I like best; Nat certainly makes this one her own
3 Travelin Soldier. ************** This is the track that I first downloaded from Kazza; this is the track that made me fall in love with the Dixie Chicks. If you listen to no other track then listen to this one. A story of a boy going off to join the army. A boy who has no one to call his own until he meets a young waitress. He writes to her as he goes through his training, he writes to her, "His pretty young girl with a bow in her hair" from Vietnam and then the letters stop. The next thing at a football game everyone is asked to stand while a list of the Vietnam dead is read out. Predictable yes, beautiful yes and tender yes its all those things and it has the best harmonies on the chorus line that I have ever heard.
4 Truth No2. ********** Gentle track featuring the banjo heavily laying down a beat like a steam train on a track backed by a heavy bass this tells of a quest for truth from within a violent relationship.
5 White Trash Wedding. *******************
This track is a real hoedown, Marty on banjo really rocks, the lyrics some the track up. “I shouldn’t be wearing white and you can’t afford no ring, say I do and kiss me quick cause baby’s on the way".
6 A Home. ******** A slow track that recognises the value of a home against the urge to wander that can affect all of us while reflecting on what might have been.
7 More Love. ********** This track showed me just how beautiful and melodic the dobro can be in the right hands and in Emily’s hands it rings out true and as crystal clear as a bell on a clear calm night. Backed by strong emotional vocals from Natalie it tells of how easy it is for things, simple mundane things to come if allowed between two people.
8 I Believe in Love. *************** Written by the Chicks, this track featured on the live “Tribute to Heroes” telethon in America for the victims of the September 11th massacre. The Dixie’s have long been vocal in their condemnation of the action. The track itself is slow and melancholy featuring many close harmonies and a stunning solo by Martie playing the fiddle.
9 Tortured, Tangled Hearts. ********************** “Oh Love, oh love you fickle thing, such pretty words and golden rings” This track tells of love gone wrong, love that has died. Its fast and furious, pure country, featuring Marty on the banjo. Had you have asked me prior to hearing the Dixie Chicks what I thought of the banjo I would have probably said not much. That’s changed now in a big way, in Marties hand it becomes alive the sound being a refreshing change from modern synthesised sounds.
10 Lil, Jack Slade. ************** This ones an instrumental pure and simple, but what does astound me is just how quickly Emily can pick at the strings of her banjo this together with some fine fiddle solos from Martie make for an interesting if brief interlude.
11 Godspeed (Sweat Dreams) *********************** Emmylou Harris features on this slow track, almost a lullaby it is a beautiful wonderful haunting tale.
12 Top of the World. **************** A very sad little track almost two songs in one it tells of things unsaid that should have been said. A tale of a spirit lamenting not having told his wife what she deserved to hear before it was to late. It’s a gem of a track, both compulsive and addictive building to a crescendo of emotion and hope, lamenting not having loved Jesus, not having shared as much as he could and now there is nothing no hope no way forward.
Well these girls have certainly opened my eyes; their mixture of Bluegrass and Country has won them yet another fan. This is the first album that I have bought by them and I can tell you it this, it will not be the last. So go out there buy the album listen to a track online do anything but do not deny yourself their music. Music should know no barriers of age race or sex and this music is a refreshing change and revelation.

A HOME (4:56) **
A standard slow country ballad of love lost and regret.
MORE LOVE (5:07) ****
This is another country ballad – very similar in style but slightly quicker pace to the previous track. However there are some interesting patterns and counter melodies picked out in the accompaniment using Uillean pipes, penny whistle and bodhran. The Chicks have used Irish influences to very good effect in the past, demonstrating the ... ...page devoted to this album. This also includes playable excepts of the first five tracks. Advantages: fantastic lyrics Disadvantages: most of the good songs are at the beginning of the album
...the catchy beat about leaving home for better things, followed by the thoughtful 'Landslide' and the beautiful ballad 'Travelling soldier' which to be honest made me cry when I heard it.
Following this are 4 or 5 more great songs such as 'Truth number 2' with brilliant edgy lyrics like "you don't like the sound of the truth coming from my mouth" great for singing loud to when your mad!
I would say there are about 8 fantastic songs on the album, ... ...the album which is a shame.
All in all, i found this album inspirational. It may sound a little over the top but listening to those songs and the beautifully written lyrics, it felt like you had an insight into the bands lives and coming away from their homes down south, but never forgetting where their roots were.
If an album can create such emotion in me especially as i have never like country music, then i know its good.
So don't judge it because ...

Their latest album HOME is just well deserved in their write ups from back in their home state of texas. It is a foot tappin', get your butts up dancin' and cant stop playing it whilst screaming your lungs out singing!!
There is not that much different from the other albums though. There are a mixture of beautiful ballads and very hard country "yee-haa" tracks. It is a great hit with kids and country music followers at heart. I would recommend ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Home - Dixie Chicks"
Advantages: Amazing ballads, catchy bluegrass, fantastic sound Disadvantages: Little quick in tempo in places
OK, so the first two reviews I wrote regarding the DixieChicks could be deemed somewhat biased. I am a huge fan of country, I am an even bigger fan of the DixieChicks. I make no apologies for this, they are a remarkable trio. I also make no apology for saying that 'Home', their third album, released after a three-year break, is their best yet.
Following time off to get married/have babies, the DixieChicks come back with this stunning album which follows up their landmark success from the multi award winning 'Wide Open Spaces' and 'Fly'.
It is fair to say with 'Home', they have come full circle and go back to their roots. This album has all that you expect from the DixieChicks, the sounds of the mandolin, banjo, dobro, guitar and fiddle mixed wonderfully with great vocals to produce that one of a kind Country sound ...
Advantages: Wonderfully moody and thoughtful Disadvantages: Will you ever look at some of your other stuff in the same light again?
I have always considered myself an music lover, but not a music buff.
I tend not to follow an artist or group through each and every album they make. I hear something, I like it, I buy it.
For this reason I am very often considered to have rather a diverse music collection, covering a real musical cross section. Many of the more recent albums I have purchased have been recommended by members on this site. I have to confess to not keeping up with the latest chart toppers, so very often I will hear of a new band or artist on here, pop off and download a song, give it a few plays and then make up own mind. Recent additions to my collection have included The dixieChicks....Home and also this, my latest aquisition.....Coldplay...A rush of blood to the head.
Well haven't these guys come a long way since they met up in 1996. Who ...
Advantages: More than just country music Disadvantages: Not their best effort
It's been a tough few years for the DixieChicks since the release of their third album, "Home". Not long after it was released, singer Natalie Maines made comments against President Bush and the war in Iraq. As a result, people started burning their CDs, slinging insults at the group and threatening to boycott their records and gigs.
As country fans turned their backs on the DixieChicks, they took a new musical direction in an effort to widen and increase their fan base. The new album is produce by Rick Rubin, better known for working in other fields, having produced artists as far apart on the musical spectrum as Jay-Z and Slipknot. What he's not known for is producing country music, although he did work with Johnny Cash. It seemed that the DixieChicks, having put out their most country music influenced album in "Home", were now ...
Dixie Chicks: Emily Robison (vocals, guitar, papoose guitar, banjo, dobro, accordion); Martie Seidel (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, viola); Natalie Maines (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals); Bryan Sutton (guitar); Lloyd Maines (slide guitar); Adam Steffey, Chris Thile (mandolin); Stefanie Astedi, Leigh Mahoney (violin); Lara Hicks (viola); Sara Nelson (cello); Glenn Fukunaga (bass); John Mock, Paul Pearcy (percussion). HOME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Recording Package. "Long Time Gone" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Lil' Jack Slade" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. HOME was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Long Time Gone" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. For their third album HOME, the Dixie Chicks went back to their bluegrass roots in crafting a record fired in the kiln of recent motherhood and a highly publicized legal battle with their label. Recorded under the gentle hand of producer Lloyd Maines (front Chick Natalie's pop), these dozen cuts are devoid of any Nashville gloss and are instead steeped in the organic harmonies and twang of recent releases by Nickel Creek and Dolly Parton. With sisters Marty Maguire and Emily Robison providing instrumental support on fiddle and banjo respectively, the Chicks are equally at home ripping through the runaway breakdown "White Trash Wedding" as they are tapping into heartfelt compositions by Radney Foster ("Godspeed [Sweet Dreams]") and Patty Griffin ("Top Of The World"). With pop sensibilities that are never too far from the surface, it's no surprise that this talented trio would do such a fine job covering Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and giving it the kind of shimmering treatment sure to put a smile on Stevie Nicks's face. Despite the duress the Dixie Chicks were toiling under, HOME proves that from turmoil comes stellar creative effort.
