OK, so the first two reviews I wrote regarding the Dixie Chicks could be deemed somewhat biased. I am a huge fan of country, I am an even bigger fan of the Dixie Chicks. I make no apologies for this, they are a remarkable trio. I also make no apology for saying that 'Home', their third album, released after a three-year break, is their best yet.
Following time off to get married/have babies, the Dixie Chicks come back with this stunning album which follows up their landmark success from the multi award winning 'Wide Open Spaces' and 'Fly'.
It is fair to say with 'Home', they have come full circle and go back to their roots. This album has all that you expect from the Dixie Chicks, the sounds of the mandolin, banjo, dobro, guitar and fiddle mixed wonderfully with great vocals to produce that one of a kind Country sound.
The albums first single, 'Long Time Gone' enjoyed a large amount success on the charts and very much backs their theory that a catchy, foot tapping single kick starts an albums success. Telling the all too common tale of leaving home for the bright lights and big city in search of stardom, the song takes an unexpected turn and you find yourself back where you started-at home. It is a great opening number.
The Dixie Chicks really outdo themselves on the second track, 'Landslide'. This remake of the Fleetwood Mac ballad takes on a bluegrass twist to give an interesting perspective. Whilst in the main covers fail to energise as the original did, this one is fantastic, a timeless classic.
Another great love story is 'Travelin' Soldier'. The slow beat conveys the sad story of two star crossed lovers, a young waitress and a soon to be departing soldier. Just as soon as love begins, tragedy brings their short lives together to an abrupt end.
Saying this, the album is not all about ballads, although you will find some great ones on it ('More Love', 'Home'). 'White Trash Wedding' for example has that upbeat Country sound which somewhat resembles their old hit 'Sin Wagon'. It also has some great solos. 'Lil' Jack Slade' named for a son of the trio, is a great instrumental which really gives the girls an opportunity to show off their diverse talents on their different instruments. To finish, 'Top of the World' is a great song, expressing the feelings of being down and wanting to be 'on top of the world'. The orchestra mixed with the vocals produces an almost haunting sound and leaves you practically breathless.
Just like the previous albums, whether Country is part of your musical interest, 'Home' is a must have. It has the same edge the Dixie Chicks always seem able to lay down on an album, but it also has something extra. The songs just seem so much more powerful and expressive than anything they have done before. I would certainly recommend it.
Advantages: Pleasant enough county rock Disadvantages: Needed a ?big one?
Perhaps, surprisingly given my musical tastes, I really enjoyed the previous album release ?Fly? by the DixieChicks. I certainly wasn?t alone as it was a phenomenal seller in the US and won several music awards to boot. The girls ? Natalie Maines (Lead vocals), Martie Seidel (Fiddle, viola, vocals) and Emily Robison (Guitar, banjo, vocals) - are all accomplished musicians and pleasing on the eye too. Although they have not made much impact in the UK, I felt it would be reasonable to buy their new output ?Home? unheard.
What with marriages, liaisons, babies and wrangling over contract with record labels, there has probably not been much time for singing recently. Consequently there has been a gap of almost three years between these albums and a change of record label.
The DixieChicks have built up a reputation of being an amalgam ...
Advantages: Fresh Addictive Compulsive Listening Disadvantages: To Short
having told his wife what she deserved to hear before it was to late. It?s a gem of a track, both compulsive and addictive building to a crescendo of emotion and hope, lamenting not having loved Jesus, not having shared as much as he could and now there is nothing no hope no way forward.
Well these girls have certainly opened my eyes; their mixture of Bluegrass and Country has won them yet another fan. This is the first album that I have bought by them and I can tell you it this, it will not be the last. So go out there buy the album listen to a track online do anything but do not deny yourself their music. Music should know no barriers of age race or sex and this music is a refreshing change and revelation.

Advantages: fantastic lyrics Disadvantages: most of the good songs are at the beginning of the album
When my dad made a rather unwilling and cynical me listen to the DixieChicks new album "home" I wasn't best pleased! Country has never been my thing as it just isn't the 'cool' thing for a 19-year-old to listen to right?
Wrong! After listening to the first fantastic track 'long time gone' i was ready to don a cowboy hat! The three girls that make up the band have simply outstanding voices and the first 8 songs on the album are completely original and refreshing.
There is a very varied mix of ballads, new country with a funky edge and classic ‘old skool’ country on this, their latest album.
Listening to the lyrics made it clear that this was indeed a labour of love for the band, written from experience about their lives (hence the title 'Home')
The opening track really gets the mood of the album off to a great start ...
Dixie Chicks: Emily Robison (vocals, guitar, papoose guitar, banjo, dobro, accordion); Martie Seidel (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, viola); Natalie Maines (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals); Bryan Sutton (guitar); Lloyd Maines (slide guitar); Adam Steffey, Chris Thile (mandolin); Stefanie Astedi, Leigh Mahoney (violin); Lara Hicks (viola); Sara Nelson (cello); Glenn Fukunaga (bass); John Mock, Paul Pearcy (percussion). HOME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Recording Package. "Long Time Gone" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Lil' Jack Slade" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. HOME was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Long Time Gone" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. For their third album HOME, the Dixie Chicks went back to their bluegrass roots in crafting a record fired in the kiln of recent motherhood and a highly publicized legal battle with their label. Recorded under the gentle hand of producer Lloyd Maines (front Chick Natalie's pop), these dozen cuts are devoid of any Nashville gloss and are instead steeped in the organic harmonies and twang of recent releases by Nickel Creek and Dolly Parton. With sisters Marty Maguire and Emily Robison providing instrumental support on fiddle and banjo respectively, the Chicks are equally at home ripping through the runaway breakdown "White Trash Wedding" as they are tapping into heartfelt compositions by Radney Foster ("Godspeed [Sweet Dreams]") and Patty Griffin ("Top Of The World"). With pop sensibilities that are never too far from the surface, it's no surprise that this talented trio would do such a fine job covering Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and giving it the kind of shimmering treatment sure to put a smile on Stevie Nicks's face. Despite the duress the Dixie Chicks were toiling under, HOME proves that from turmoil comes stellar creative effort.
