Home is the first album from Simply Red for more than three years. Their last (1999's Love ... more
and the Russian Winter) was both underwhelming and underperforming--the result of the band's increasingly unfashionable status and the flame that once made Mick Hucknall a great songwriter starting to burn out. Many artists in this position attempt some kind of back-to-basics approach to remind everyone why they sold so many records in the first place. On the surface, this looks like what Hucknall has attempted, particularly with opener "Home". But scratch the surface and you'll find bold, upbeat and funky songs, full of joyous brass and strings. Both "Fake" and "Sunrise" (complete with a forgivable Hall and Oates sample) are wonderfully reminiscent of early Hucknall but infused with a new-found confidence. Home is Simply Red in a nutshell--great, soulful songs, funky guitars and Hucknall's remarkable voice, the latter something that most people forget when criticising the band for their "coffee table" appeal. The main problem is that there aren't enough of these songs. The album is bolstered significantly by a number of covers (most notably the inspired Dylan classic, "Positively 4th Street"). They're great, but ultimately B-side fodder, taking up valuable room on the album after a mammoth absence--what has Hucknall been doing for the last three years? Well, setting up his own record label to release this, for one thing. Hucknall should have capitalised on this opportunity more because despite the quality on offer here, it simply isn't enough. --Ben Johncock

And on the whole they are a collection of first rate songs.
Home on a par with any track off of their "Picture Book" album.
Fake, Lost Weekend and Something for you are probably the 3 weakest tracks, but they are still pleasant.
However the 3 real stars of the album are "Sunrise" which heavily samples the Hall and Oates song "I cna't go for that ... ..."You make me feel brand new" which is a cover version of the old Stylistics song and finally the best song of the entire album is "Positively 4th Street" a cover of Bob Dylan's swipe at all his ex-folk friends. Stunning.
The bonus DVD features footage of a couple of live tracks filmed in concert in Italy and alternative audio versions of Fake and Sunrise. The DVD version is probably only of interest to true fans ... more
I must admit right from the very start that although I quite like SImply Red's songs there is something I just do not like about Mick Hucknall. Maybe it is his arrogance when ever he is on TV. However putting this to one side I have bought a few Simply Red albums over the years but the Love and the Russian Winter album was too much. The blandness of it made me swear never to buy one of their albums ever again. However the other week we were going on a family week-end to Whitby and my wife appeared with this CD and before I could protest it was in the car's player and we were off. At first I was ready to stick my fingers in my ears and hum a motorhead song but as the trip progressed I started to warm to the whole album and enjoyed it.
There are 10 songs (11 if you include the title track's reprise at the end): 1. Home 2. Fake 3. Sunrise 4. You Make Me Feel Brand New 5. Horne Loan Blues 6. Positively 4th Street 7. Lost Weekend 8. Money In My Pocket (Plan B mix) 9. Something For You 10. It's You 11. Home (reprise)

However the 3 real stars of the album are "Sunrise" which heavily samples the Hall and Oates song "I cna't go for that (no can do)" and it is a work of genius. "You make me feel brand new" which is a cover version of the old Stylistics song and finally the best song of the entire album is "Positively 4th Street" a cover of Bob Dylan's swipe at all his ex-folk friends. Album Notes
Simply Red includes: Mick Hucknall (vocals); Andy Wright, Anthea Clarke, Arthur Adams, Bernie Worrell, Chris de Margary, Danny Saxon, Dave Clayton, Dean Parks, Dee Johnson, Freddie Washington, Gota Yashiki, Ian Kirkham, James Gadson, Karl Vanden Bossche. English version contains a bonus DVD (PAL) with two live video tracks recorded at the Teatro Antico di Taormina arena in Sicily, both of which originally appeared on a previous Simply Red live DVD release, as well as band interviews and two audio tracks ("Sunrise" (previously unreleased) and "Fake" (Single Mix)). Comes repackaged in a Viva Box with a sticker. Following a professional breakup with Elektra Entertainment, Simply Red (AKA Mick Hucknall) turned away from the built-in support of a major-label structure and struck gold in going the independent route with HOME, an outing that sounds like the most organic effort since the band's early days. As one of the greatest blue-eyed soul singers in the business, Hucknall's decision to flesh out Simply Red's sound with orchestration and solid brass arrangements comes up aces. Die-hards will eat up the inimitable Northern soul of "Fake," the organ-kissed "Home Loan Blues," and a heartfelt reading of "You Make Me Feel Brand New." Casual fans will even get a kick out of the breakout smash "Sunrise," built around a prominent sample from Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go for That." As a man who's never been afraid to wear influences on his sleeve, this redheaded frontman continues the trend with an orchestrated stroll through Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street" and a Plan B remix of late reggae legend Dennis Brown's "Money in My Pocket" that's given a club twist. HOME represents a welcome return from a distinctive voice that was truly missed.
