Advantages: Well, it's certainly DIFFERENT. Oh, and she looks cool on the cover! Disadvantages: oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-god-not-that
Back in oh-oh-oh-oh 1981 many people were oh-oh-oh-oh so annoyed by LaurieAnderson's oh-oh-oh-oh-O SUPERMAN which people like me oh-oh-oh-oh so nearly bought to number one. They were oh-oh-oh-oh lucky they didn't hear "Sweaters", the third track on this album, on which Laurie plays the bagpipes! Now that is the worst track of all-time.
Soh-oh-oh-oh let's oh-oh-oh-oh start with the noh-oh-oh-oh-torious oh-oh-oh-oh O SUPERMAN (FOR MASSENET), track no.6 on the CD.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-so radio un-friendly at 8 minutes and 21 seconds long. Anderson created a vocal tape-loop oh-oh-oh-of herself monosyllabically chanting "oh" and this runs through-oh-oh-oh-out the track. To some it was hypnotic, oh-oh-oh-oh-others found it s-oh-oh-oh-oh annoh-oh-oying they wanted to throw the radi-oh-oh-oh-oh at the wall.
Based loosely on the French composer ...
Advantages: Very different from run of the mill pop/ rock Disadvantages: Not to everyones tatses
It's hard to categorise LaurieAnderson; renascence woman, art-school performance artist, or just plain barking mad!
Anderson has been skirting around the edges of the music industry for the best part of 35 years, in her own idiosyncratic way - whilst being a trained violinist, is equally competent on electronic keyboard and is an accomplished poet and performance artist as well as sculptor.
She's also as well known for being the 'better half' or rock legend Lou Reed of Velvet Underground fame, but richly deserves respect in her own right.
She's not a household name, the only thing she ever seems to be remembered for is her 1981 single 'Oh Superman' ('uh - uh - uh - uh ?.') which reached number 2 in the UK single chart in 1981 - you'll find that on the album 'Big Science'.
Mr heartbreak is easily the most accessible ...
Advantages: Music that is innovative and original and strangely beautiful Disadvantages: One or two tracks prevent the album from being an all time classic
which helps them work at deeper, secret levels of the psyche". The second track 'Big Science' is slow and melodic electronic sound with percussion accompaniment of electronic tom-toms and tympani. At first it seems to be a commentary about alienation in newly developed bland American suburban landscapes referred to as "Golden cities, Golden towns" full of shopping malls and freeways. But in the warm tones of Laurie's voice one can almost detect a poignant love for place and home.
"Walking & Falling" is both serene and quirky. We hear Anderson's soothing warm voice and delicate pronunciation against minimalist background of electronic synthesiser. The vocals and lyrics possess a strange hallucinatory beauty that lead you to an unexpected conclusion. It's the sort of track that wouldn't be out of place on one of those self-hypnosis CDs. It ...

Personnel: Laurie Anderson (vocals, violin, keyboards); William Burroughs (vocals); Adrian Belew, Nile Rodgers (guitar); Richard Landry (clarinet, saxophone); Robert Arron (saxophone); Joy Askew, Rob Sabino (keyboards); Bill Laswell (bass); David Van Tieghem (drums, percussion); Daniel Ponce, Isidro Bobadillo (percussion); Dolette McDonald, Janice Perdarvis, Curtis King, Frank Simms, Diane Garisto, Tawatha Agee, Brenda White-King (background vocals). Producers: Laurie Anderson, Roma Baran, Nile Rodgers. Following the success of the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, Laurie Anderson decided to film one of her tours for theatrical release. Unfortunately, Home of the Brave didn't have much impact in the theaters. But the soundtrack CD attests that it was a great show nonetheless. Previously, Anderson had worked solo with slides, samples and her pearly white electric violin. The props remained for this tour, but America's best known performance artist was just starting to make her own brand of funky pop music with a real live band including downtown bassist Bill Laswell and percussionist extraordinaire David Van Tighem. These mostly new songs/narratives find Anderson startlingly lowering her voice several octaves with the help of a vocoder attached to her trusty violin. The mood is infectious enough that after special guest William Burroughs does his croaking intro to"Sharkey's Machine"--no vocoder necessary--Anderson actually gets him to waltz her around the stage. Now that's something you have to see
