boys, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, can do no wrong. Breaking into the club scene with their own blend of techno-disco in 1995, their debut album is the 80's electro-funk record of your dreams. Influenced by old school Chicago house and Detroit minimalist techno (all name checked on "Teachers"), Homework ranges from the warped electro that has become their trademark on "Around the World" and "Da Funk", to banging acid techno on "Rollin'and Scratchin'" and "Alive". An album so funky it could make James Brown cry, and with so much bite you can feel it at the back of your throat. --Ed Potton

This debut album from the fantastic French duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo is essential for any dance, electronic and/or Daft Punk fans. Most are aware of the hugely successful album ‘Discovery’ by Daft Punk, but ‘Homework’ is just as good in quality if a little less commercial.
The music in this album has a French sound- almost disco-like! The reason that Daft Punk have been so successful is that they manage to produce original, new and innovative music whilst still keeping their own ‘sound’. There’s always a distinctive Daft Punk feel in their songs, this undoubtedly is due to the fact that they’ve both written and produced all the tracks on the album.
Even Pete Tong has listed ‘Homework’ in his top twenty essential dance albums of all time. He describes the album as:
Cloaking pure jacking house with an array of kitch, pop culture imagery, this debut from two pretty-boy Parisians has a rawness and yet a sophistication that lifts it far beyond the realms of pure club soundtrack, while the roll-call of house greats on ‘Teachers’ shows Daft Punk know their roots.
Tong definitely has his own way with words, but you can’t help but agree with his opinion. The ‘House greats’ on ‘Teachers’ include Luke Slater, DJ Hell, Jeff Mills, Tomka, and Pierre, although I’d categorise them as being more on the Techno side than House.
The real beauty of this album is the fact that it works as a whole. Unlike a lot of albums it doesn’t rely on two or three songs to sell the album to you. I personally have a different favourite Daft Punk every week. Last week was the brilliant ‘, but today I have the wonderful ‘Revolution 909’ on repeat. There’s a timeless feel to the album and I’m sure many dance fans will agree with me. ‘Homework’ begins with ‘Daftendirekt’ which was actually recorded live at a Fuse Party in Gent. This is amazing as you’d never guess this by listening to the track! It is a perfect song to start off the album with its infectious beat.
'Rollin' & Scratchin’ is a good (though underrated) track with a hard and jerky feel. It is a little on the long side though and I feel it would be better edited down to 6 minutes or less. The song actually sets my Mum’s teeth on edge when it’s played loud and I don’t think she shares my enthusiasm for it! ;-)
‘Oh Yeah’ is another attitude-filled catchy track which I love. It introduces special guests DJ Deelat and DJ Crabbe, with the vocals being shouted by Daft Punk. Although it’s only 2 minutes long I still think it’s worth mentioning.
The album ends with ‘Funk Ad’ a 50-second instrumental, which I feel, would have worked better to finish off the album if it was a bit longer. Apart this the order and selection of the songs on this album is faultless.
Overall I think this is a brilliant album which I’ll never stop listening to. A few songs that deserve a mention include ‘Around The World’, ‘Rock’n Roll’ and ‘Alive’. I’d definitely recommend this album to anyone who likes dance and/or electronic music, as well as any current Daft Punk fans who’ve only heard ‘Discovery’.
Advantages: one of the best funk, house, techno albums ever Disadvantages: definitly no
...the same rock-spirit inside.
Homework is definitly the album that maked the club-insider-tip Daft Punk to a well known and lateron famous music. No wonder why. Homework is full of fresh, new, inovative Funk. It brough a little revolution in the German club-scene. I remember nigths over nights in the spring of 1997, dancing to this music. And you can feel that this is not just music made by some guys using a computer and some samples and trying to ... ...If you re new in this kind of music just listen to Homework to get a view into the latest history of funky-electronic-music. If you re deeper in techno, this is a MUST-HAVE!
CD is around 11.99, vinyl around 18.99

Funky French Fun Review ofHomework - Daft Punkby
SkyscraperFanClub
Advantages: Quirky fun with a distinctive French flavour. Disadvantages: Occasional forays into the excessive.
This debut album from French house artists Daft Punk is essential listening for fans of dance and electronic music. The style is instantly recognisable as French: funky bass wobbles and wild synthetic screeches, creating a vaguely disco sound. The distinctive Daft Punk flavour is the marriage of these sounds to a deep house beat and powerful, solid bassline. This style is consistent throughout 'Homework' and is almost always highly successful. The ... ...a sound which can both be consistently defined as belonging to that group while still allowing them enough variation within that sound to produce music that is fresh, innovative and not repetitive. Daft Punk accomplish this with considerable success. The singles, 'Da Funk,' 'Around The World' and 'Revolution 909' reflect this most strongly. In some areas, however, 'Homework' wanders too far intro hard house territory, and the resultant sound is quite ...

THIS IS A REVIEW OF DISCOVERY *NOT* HOMEWORK
Discovery is one of those albums that when you first listen to it you think you could have written it yourself. Could it be that hard? Whack a beat in here put a sample on there and you’d have your No. 1 tune in no time. Well, after listening to the album (released on March 13th) for some time I can say that Daft Punk are anything but your average “cut ‘n’ paste” musicians. ... ...Punk (Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo) have created a very retro album, reminiscent of seventies disco and eighties minimilism, yet one which also feels fresh and vibrant. You do not feel that they are waving their vocoders and synths in your face, wanting you to see how well they know how to use them, as some musicians and producers try to do. You feel instead that they are enjoying their music, not letting the technology unduly get ...

Advantages: The excellent live tracks Disadvantages: Sound quality
In my opinion, Less than Jake must be the most patchy punk / ska band in the world. They do have some really amazing songs, but also a load of not so good ones too. This album (the only one I've ever seen belongs to me), is made up of songs which have been previously released on out of print and limited edition vinyls. Despite this, I've heard many of them before. The problem with Less Than Jake, is that they never seem to be able to release an album ... ...has 24 tracks, but 12 of those I've already heard on other albums of theirs (if you have 'The Pezz Collection' I wouldn't recommend buying this). It would be nice for a change to be able to buy some totally new stuff (actually, I think that maybe their new album (Borders and Boundaries) is just that, all new), so nevermind. As I said earlier, there are some pretty good tracks here (but not many), and the rest are pretty average. The sound quality ...

Advantages: You know when you have to listen to this. Yes, you do. Disadvantages: Mmm... It's too short !
OK. Back around '97, I had heard the singles Around The World and Da Funk, but I didn't really listen to either and didn't really take Daft Punk too seriously. I thought the videos were good, and that was about it. Until I heard homework. What they do is simple, but amazingly effective. This is music that does not have its head up its own ass like alot of the grandiose, synthy dance you hear in clubs nowadays. The beats are uniformly simple but all ...

Advantages: Brilliant remixes of old tracks Disadvantages: None at All
...DaftPunk is probably one of the best Dance acts around. Ever since their release of 'One More Time', DaftPunk has received international sucess and praise. Alive 2007 feature DaftPunk's performance in Bercy, Paris.
In this album, DaftPunk mix tracks from their early albums Homework and Discovery. The album features some bold and interesting combinations especially that of 'Aerodynamic' and 'DaftPunk' as well as 'Harder, Better, Stronger, Faster' and 'Around the World'.
DaftPunk once again prove that they are the Kings of the Dance World. The album provides an entertaining new perspective on some of their old hits. You can feel the club atmosphere as the CD pumps out of your speakers. This a definate buy for all Dance listeners out there....

Advantages: Great tunes, humour (though not novelty) and a wonderful 80's vibe Disadvantages: Final track 'Too Long' is as it says on the tin. Compared to first album, maybe they've sold-out a little bit.
...Lets be honest - did anyone play the first album that much? Did anyone continually listen to it all the way through? I certainly didn't.
'Homework', DaftPunks first album was a great mish-mash of quite groundbreaking French house which included a couple of the best tunes of the last few years, 'Da Funk' and 'Around the World'. But ultimately the album disppointed by being too patchy and throwing in too many repetitive beats (repetitive as in boring, not as in trance-like).
'Discovery' changes all that by being snappy, funky and incessantly entertaining! Whereby some tracks on the first album dragged way beyond their welcome, most tracks on 'Discovery' are under the magic 4 minute mark. With a variety of styles and great sense-of-humour it makes for an addictive listen.
The influences are all 80's based and a few years ago you...

Advantages: Daft Punk going back to their roots Disadvantages: A lot different from Discovery album; some may not like that
...they released the now classic album "Homework". Even though they were signed to Virgin it was still recorded in Thomas' bedroom. In 1998 Thomas Bangalter released the classic "Music Sounds Better With You" under the name Stardust and in 2002 he had another huge hit with DJ Falcon on "So Much Love To Give". So DaftPunk went on to release the synth-pop album "Discovery" in 2001 which became a sure fire success with hits such as the magnificent "Digital Love" and the party anthem "One More Time". The videos for all the singles from Discovery are Manga inspired and they all linked to tell a story. In 2004 the cartoons were released as a feature length film "Interstella 5555". Finally in 2004 they recorded this album "Human After All".
DaftPunk are notoriously hard to pin down. They rarely give interviews and nobody really knows what they...

Album Notes: Personnel: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Producers: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Recorded at Daft House, Paris, France. "Da Funk" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. "Around The World" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the two French twenty-something DJs who make up Daft Punk, are relentless dance-music aficionados and historians. And unlike many of their contemporaries, their interests don't just lie in the electronic beats that have been rockin' the clubs since the mid-80s. The two knob-twiddlers are just as well-versed in Giorgio Moroder's Eurodisco grooves, Chic, and the old-school rhythms of Afrika Bambaata and the Sugarhill Records catalog, as they are in the Chicago house and Detroit techno traditions. When they're not assembling catchy-as-hell bits of electro-pop ("Around The World"), throwing down slabs of minimalist funk ("Da Funk"), or marrying Miami bass to Kraftwerkian blips ("Oh Yeah"), Homem-Christo and Bangalter try to impart a little knowledge. On "Teachers," they use a Ween-esque distorted vocal line to name-check a broad list of influences that includes Brian Wilson, Dr. Dre and Armand Van Helden. Their broad focus, utopian determination and, of course, their way with a beat earn Daft Punk's HOMEWORK a well-deserved "A".
