THIS IS A REVIEW OF DISCOVERY *NOT* HOMEWORK
Discovery is one of those albums that when you first listen to it you think you could have written it yourself. Could it be that hard? Whack a beat in here put a sample on there and you’d have your No. 1 tune in no time. Well, after listening to the album (released on March 13th) for some time I can say that Daft Punk are anything but your average “cut ‘n’ paste” musicians.
The two mental and inspired Frenchmen behind Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo) have created a very retro album, reminiscent of seventies disco and eighties minimilism, yet one which also feels fresh and vibrant. You do not feel that they are waving their vocoders and synths in your face, wanting you to see how well they know how to use them, as some musicians and producers try to do. You feel instead that they are enjoying their music, not letting the technology unduly get in the way.
Some tracks, like “Crescendolls” , “High Life” and “Short Circuit” are sheer electronic fun, whilst others have slightly more traditional forms. “Something About Us” is a less energetic (yet funky) ballad, yet is still just as listenable. “Verdis Quo” reminds me somewhat of some early Jean Michelle Jarre, in that it contains as much emotional content as the listener brings to it. On one level it is simply fun to listen to, on another, as I have found, it can be heart breakingly beautiful. “Voyager” is a funk groove based on a great sounding bass line, and is pretty good. In my opinion, the one song (released as a single) you probably know, “One More Time”, is one of the weakest on the album. That is not to day it isn’t any good, I think it is great, but I have found more depth in the other tracks.
Call me a naïve fool for liking Daft Punk. Call them cynical businessmen who use their computers to create bland and boring music; you are entitled to your opinion. I am sure some people will not have any sort of emotional response when they listen to this, I can’t see my mum crying into her tea over it. But, personally speaking, it is one of the albums I have recently been playing non-stop, and, like Parachutes, it manages to list me back up whenever things get on top of me. I’m probably reading too much into it, but that is the thing about music, everyone hears it differently, and it brings out different memories and responses.
Give this album a listen, you might find something you like.

Nice comments, but you are listed under Homework yet commenting on Discovery - could confuse people and make them buy the wrong CD!

Advantages: Great tunes, humour (though not novelty) and a wonderful 80's vibe Disadvantages: Final track 'Too Long' is as it says on the tin. Compared to first album, maybe they've sold-out a little bit.
