Hors D'oeuvres (26 Original Mono Recordings 1936-1951) - Sid Phillips

Advantages: An Excellent and Interesting album that's a Classic in its Genre.
Disadvantages: It might be a Slow-Burner for some.

.... Probably my favourite track of the album and it is definitely one of the more easily accessible songs. **ni9e** This is where we find Simon entertaining the Cylon that introduced 'Star damage'. Not just in any fashion, oh no, he generates an almost alien sounding drum fest of sampled madness and not content with that, apparently invites a friend in the semblance of Gemma from Imogen (ex-Chasm). It is here they create a curious hors d'oeuvre for the next track. **yellow fever** For me this shows the second glimpse of Tool influence on this album. It's an unhurried smouldering song that takes a winding path, snaking through so many excellent melodies and in doing so building up a tremendous ambience ...'and you can blame the weatherman, but it's pouring down inside'... ...Bessie Smith-born 15th April1894-died 26th September1937. Bessie Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee . She started her career in minstrelsy & vaudeville , she went on to record The St Louis blues & was accompanied by Louis Armstrong on the cornet & Fred Longshaw on the harmonium. Disadvantages: If you have not seen the musical it may not make sense

...The book was written by Mary Hayley Bell and the original film starred Hayley Mills. The film was set in this country in the industrial north but the musical is set in deep south of America. The story is about a motherless family, the eldest of whom - Swallow, finds a strange man in the barn. She asks him who he is and his reply "Jesus Christ" shocks her. The wounds on his feet lead her and the other children to believe this man is Christ who has come back and he begs them to hide him. Naturally they do and the music then follows the story with some very powerful music. The local bad boy is about to flee north with his black girlfriend - shock horror in the south in those days. But really he fancies Swallow. Swallow growing up without her mum is vulnerable to any soft soap. Her young brother 'Poor baby' is just rebellious... Read review
