Another innovative album from Basement Jaxx
Review of Kish Kash - Basement Jaxx by tim18

Advantages: Basement Jaxx aren't just what they seem!
Disadvantages: The album could be too diverse for some people!

...listening to their third album, Kish Kash, I can definitely tell that this is not your standard club music. Their are anonymous diva vocal remixes of popular songs I often hear when I drag my friends out to the clubs. If nothing else, the vocal collaborations ( Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Siouxsie Sioux ) indicate something special. Kish Kash starts out strong with the track 'Good Luck', which is of a drum & bass style. Complex bass lines support Me'Shell ...
...have claimed that Kish Kash isn't quite as heady or progressive as Jaxx's first two albums? I feel this is true in a way, but I was waiting for something different from them, which they acheived with great results. Overall, a fantastic album with little to let you down. ... Read review

George Is Not So On
Review of George Is On - Deep Dish by amazingboy

Advantages: Some good modern songs.
Disadvantages: Not as good as previous albums.

I approached this album with an open mind, as I've been a follower of all things Deep Dish since I was introduced to them in the Renaissance arena at Ministry of Sound at Knebworth. They were immense that night, and my purchase of Yoshiesque 1 & 2 that followed was nothing less than a life-shaping experience, influencing the direction my musical tastes take even now. I've also been pleased with the Global Underground mixes. I bought Junk Science, ...
...I was disappointed. Apart from 'Mohammed Is Jesus' and 'The Future of the Future', both of which I had already heard, loved and played ad infinitum, the album was for want of a better word wishy-washy. ...and that brings me to the tracks on this album. The first time I heard 'Flashdance' was (unashamedly) when I downloaded a low quality promo on a p2p network. Shortly afterwards I went to see Deep Dish in the Radio 1 Essential Mix arena at Creamfields. ... Read review

My My My Van Helden!!!!!
Review of Nympho - Armand Van Helden by nadiawalton

Advantages: If you like his previous work, you'll love this!!
Disadvantages: Not enough tracks!

...humming! The title track Nympho features Van Helden himself under the strange psuedonym Virgin Killer - he has a tendency to scream alot on this track and the others that he is featured in. some of you might like this kind of thing, but i think it spoils the tracks ever so slightly and is a bit off putting when trying to listen to the beats and words! Come Play features a cover group called Creme Blush. This song i feel is slightly milder than ...
...mixed up style. Sugar features another artist called Jessy Moss, another I've never heard of before! The track is almost vampy, with a different beat and sound to the more garage and funky beats. Into Your eyes and When the Lights Go Down have the same funky, almost pop-like beat as My My My - the songs may be deemed repetive with a lack of other vocals but i think this works a treat, it keeps the tune in your head for ages (more out of tune humming ... "We don't care what you think...."
Review of Ego War [PA] - Audio Bullys by x_helix_x

Advantages: A fantastic debut album from pioneers of hooligan house
Disadvantages: One boring track, may be too gritty for some people

...accent. "I want a suburban ego war". The lyrics describe lots of aspects and scenes of urban life and he declares "I want to stay here for the rest of my days." It's a fun and quite light hearted way to end the album even if though it's edgy. The album art for "Ego War" is really quite plain and simple. The cover is a picture of Simon and Tom standing on a tube train but the picture is quite distorted and white letters in graffiti style spell out ...
...with a track listing and another photo very similar to that on the cover. The album art is nothing special and would go unnoticed very easily. Well as for my verdict on the album.....it's pretty damn good. It's similar in style to The Streets except with a more house edge to it with it's massive beats and MC style raps. It's not a life affirming or life changing album but then a dance music album never is and that's not what it's about. "Ego War" ... Read review

MAW music, anyone?
Review of In The House - Masters At Work (Soul Heaven Presents/Mixed By Masters At Work) - Various Artists by Anii

Advantages: good mix of established and up-and-coming artists
Disadvantages: maybe adapted for a club crowd?

...start gushing at any point in this review, then let the roof come down upon me and bury me under rubble. I am most definitely and catergorically the biggest fan of all things MAW. Masters at Work to me are like the scene in Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkabhan when he conjours up the Expecto Patronum, and for the last 7 years, i have avidly watched the shelves for MAW releases. Anyone who loves the work of these two geniuses - Kenny "Dope" Gonzales ...
...production, fuzing together soulful vocals in an effortless stream. However it's important to note that MAW quite often seem to base their records on a club crowd, so note the use of "down" time on here..... I personally don't see this as a disadvantage but some of you might on a compilation! But if you are a stranger to the work of this pair, then this album and their other Soul Heaven compilations are great ways to start listening and getting ... Read review
