The Birth Of Soul Caught Live
Review of Live At The Apollo (1962) [Remastered] - James Brown by waynehorrigan

Advantages: James Brown before he went global
Disadvantages: Very dated, none of his big hits

...by "critics" as the best live album of all time, but for me parts of Rattle And Hum by U2 and Bob Marley's Live walk all over it. Read on for the tracks. THE TRACKS -------------------- 1. Introduction To James Brown A very glitzy, showbiz opening as the compare introduces James Brown (and The Famous Flames, his then backing group). After announcing each song the band will play and Brown will sing, a cymbal and one note trumpet ring sound, followed ...
...can tell this is authentic live stuff because occasionaly a word or two becomes inaudible as Brown - presumably - steps away from the mic to perform a little dance. This is soulful, frenetic stuff in all under two minutes. 5. I Dont Mind Going back to the slow pace of Try Me this track is unique on this album because the crowd actually sit back and listen to the soulful outpouring of Brown and his more than able backing singers. Some nice bluesy ... Read review

Review of Sex Machine - James Brown (Soul) by darzipan

Advantages: soulful
Disadvantages: sound quality

...the blandly sanitized, James Brown's Sex Machine is a rousing shot of pure energy, a reminder that music can have the ability to move its listeners in more ways than one. Sex Machine is a supreme distillation of decades worth of black music, compressing rock, soul, and R&B into a lean, frighteningly efficient sound that's had hips shaking since its release. Regardless of your age, race, or any other irrelevant superficial characteristic, this hour-plus-long ...
...I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine, Brother Rapp (Part I & Part II), I Got the Feelin', and the high-octane closer Mother Popcorn. Driven by propulsive grooves and frenetic arrangements, these tracks and others like them all prove extremely effective when it comes to loosening inhibitions and provoking unconscious spasms of head-bobbing and foot-tapping. However, that's not to discount the record's emotional, horn-fueled balladry, led by the supremely ... Read review

Review of Funky President (The Very Best Of James Brown Vol.2) - James Brown (Soul) by doctor_gonzo

Advantages: too many to mention
Disadvantages: none

Funky President is a collection of the godfather of soul's slightly lesser known compositions. Don't be led into thinking however that there is any compromise on quality. This is an official best of released by Polydor records, none of the cheap rubbish you find in the bargain bin at your local record shop, which sounds like it's been recorded live on a dictaphone. James Brown is not a singer so much as a conductor, backed by an extraordinarily ...
...as directs, for example on funky drummer when he prophesises "Take me into the change" leading up to the break. The breaks themselves are truly awesome, interrupting some funky groove or other like a lightning bolt and introducing a new, usually more laid back riff. The musicianship is quite simply breathtaking, the guitar (used as an instrument of rhythm) cuts like a knife, chopping on extremely irregular beat pattern while the bass thumps hypnotically ... Banner Gittin' Buck
Review of Certified (Parental Advisory) [PA] - David Banner by XICripZ

Advantages: Lots of variety
Disadvantages: A few weaker tracks

"Certified" is the fourth album from the Mississippi rapper David Banner. I thought that I had to go back seeing that I enjoyed his latest 2008 release, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" so much, so I thought that I would see similar quality from this 2005 piece, which has him do both the rapping and a fair proportion of the production. 1. "Lost Souls" To get things going we drive straight into some straight Dirty South rap. I found that he was effective ...
...wislt managing ito integrate his influences of Rock into things with some guitar work too. **Three Stars** 2. "Treat Me Like A" (feat. Jadakiss) I still don't get how Jadakiss keeps thinking he can on some Crunk beats, but he does it once again as Lil' Jon does the production, and aside the parts which Jada takes up, it is a strong Hip Hop cut for the clubs. **Four Stars** 3. "Gangsta Walk" (feat. Three 6 Mafia, Marcus, 8Ball & MJG) On this one ... Read review

It Looks Like He Won
Review of Me Against The World [PA] - 2Pac by XICripZ

Advantages: Consistent quality
Disadvantages: One slip in quality

"Me Against The World" is the third album by the West Coast Rap legend 2Pac who was killed in 1996 as a result of a fatal shooting. The album came a year before this and has him rapping in what has been called a "nothing to lose" persona as he raps during a difficult time in his life as he was shot five times late in 1994, and was in prison for the release of the record. Despite all this, he was able to top the charts with his music, even with him ...
..."Intro" 2. "If I Die 2Nite" Heavy in bitter alliteration, this one has 'Pac's attitude for the whole release summed up as he really just doesn't care what happens to himslef, as he lives each day for what it is, and knows there's no point in pre-planning anything. **Four Stars** 3. "Me Against The World" Giving him a littel sample of G-Funk with a synth-based prodcution to hand, this one has the artist come with adesperate track, where he describes ... Read review
