DeVotchKa - How it Ends (Used on GoW 2 Trailer)
Most people have probably never heard of the music band DeVotchKa let alone their song 'How it Ends' but when I tell you this song is used on the Gears of War 2 Trailer for the Xbox 360 it should make you slightly intrigued. After all the GoW trailers are generally known for their depressing yet melodic songs.
DeVotchKa are a unique band, they are a four piece instrumental and vocal ensemble that uses many different styles of music (in particular eastern European) and fuses it with American folk/punk.
DeVotchKa actually means 'young girl' taken from the language of 'Nadsat' (English Russian fuse of language)
The groups are now based in Denver Colorado and the members include: Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder and Shawn King, all can sing and play a variety of instruments which include: Guitars, trumpets pianos, percussion, double bass, violin, accordion, just to name a few.
But I haven't just written this to talk about the band but probably their best song 'How it Ends'. The song mainly talks about inevitability and destiny, the destiny which you already know will happen, and that you know 'How it ends'.
The song features a basic repeating keyboard and piano tune (sounds typically depressing) with an accordion over lapping it, again with a repeating track. There aren't any fancy solo's nor is the music used sound particularly advanced or impressing, but it's just something about the vocals and lyrics, you don't listen to the tune but to those sad and depressing vocals which catches the listeners attention.
The chorus is breathtaking using a combination of percussion and violin crescendos inter mixed with the vocals which are constantly changing tone and pitch.
While you listen to the song it really makes you reflect on sad and woeful things as though all the bad actions in your life have been 'inevitable'. But why would you listen to a sad tune, personally I think the strongest emotion brought out by the song is that of hope, a shining beacon in the darkness, and that you will try everything to correct your wrong doings and bad happenings, but you know… 'How it ends'.
This song caters for everyone, whether you like rap, pop or rock. It is simply such a beautiful song with so many hidden messages. I'd advise all who read this to at least have a listen, simply go to YouTube and type DeVotchKa How it ends; this is one track that won't be ending any time soon.
