HOW THE WEST WAS WON

bass); John Bonham (drums).Recorded at Los Angeles Forum, Los Angeles, California and Long Beach Area, Long Beach, California on June 25 & 27, 1972.In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening Immigrant Song, reinventing the blues form on Heartbreaker, and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on Rock and Roll and Black Dog. This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come out with the touching Going to California and That's the Way, the earthy Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of Over the Hills and Far Away, all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute Dazed and Confused and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature Moby Dick show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they damn well pleased, but the bluesy grit and primal hard-rock crunch of their feel throughout this collection reveals the pure visceral magic of which these '70s icons were capable.[Reviews]Rolling Stone (6/12/03, p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - ...Captures Zep in prime swagger, fresh off their masterpiece, LED ZEPPELIN IV, with HOUSES OF THE HOLY just around the corner...Entertainment Weekly (6/20/03, pp.70-1) - ...The band storms out, playing music that is both of its time and timeless, as accessible and unapproachable as when it was made... - Rating: A+n

How the West Was Wonhas been a long time coming. For a band with such an overarching

legacy, the official record of Led Zeppelin's legendary--and unpredictable--live act has previously been poorly represented by the disappointing, scattershot soundtrack toThe Song Remains the Same. But this triple-disc live set (culled from 1972 Long Beach/LA shows in advance ofHouses of the Holy) addresses history with a vengeance, if a few decades late. These shows have rightfully assumed cult status in the bootleg market, showcasing a band at the peak of its creative and performing powers. The Zep faithful will welcome this belated release as evidence for enduring loyalty, but younger fans may find its diversity and dynamics even more enlightening--indeed, whole careers have since been built on the musical ideas Jimmy Page and company throw out here as decorative filler. Crucially rooted in the amped-and-hammered American blues of the guitarist's former band, the Yardbirds, the marathon work-outs of "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lot a Love" (which consume nearly an hour all by themselves) somehow encompass Ricky Nelson, Morocco, James Brown, Holst, Elvis Presley and Muddy Waters amidst their trademarksturm und drang, while the acoustic set that closes out Disc One showcases the band's--and particularly Robert Plant's--good-natured, crypto-Celtic folk appeal with energetic aplomb. Bigger and brasher than just about any rock act that followed in its historic wake, yet ever fan-loyal to its myriad influences, Led Zeppelin's live juggernaut finally gets the monument it deserves.--Jerry McCulley
Advantages: a classic scile of celtic rock Disadvantages: may sound dated to some
...to Hell" another Tull-esque creation. There's an unexpectedly open ending as the power chords of the song fade to flute and a repeat of the section's dominant theme.
The album not only tells of the legends of the mythic battles for the control of Erin, as it was, by the Tuatha DeDanann and the Sons of Mil, but it manages to evoke the flavour of an ancient world through its music. Yes, purists will always point out that accordions, flutes and mandolins are still relatively new instruments in the scheme of things, not to mention guitars and keyboards. What is created here is an escapist and past times feel that gives life to the tale being set to it and that's what really matters, remember this is a folk-rock band not a bunch of historical purist musicians. They do conjure up the essence of a land of heroes, giants and gods, a twilight world...

Advantages: Fun, Energetic, Abstract Hip-Hop; Good Lyrics; Prince Paul's Production; Actual Good Skits, No Bad Songs Disadvantages: A few TOOOO Many Skits, Not a Classic like many would believe
...'m the Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, And when I quest for the buddy I don't 'fess, For my Jimmy wants nothin' but the best (the best), The best (Ooh Wee!), Let's stick out jimmy and see what we can catch, (Stick em up, stick em up jimmy), Next won't be needed unless, (Jenny wanna get right to the flesh)". The orgasmic sounds at the end are hilarious, but they could just be urinating after holding it in for hours.
Even if you were stuck inside of a bubble in 1989, you still had to have at least heard "Me, Myself, and I", one of the most memorable De La Soul classics and their first true hit single. Prince Paul makes this song a complete disco extravaganza, which is actually sampled from George Clinton's "Aqua Boogie". For a more modern revisitation of this, go watch Good Burger with Keenan and Kel. YES, this was the beat played while...
