This is the first proper outing by DJ Yoda and its sets the bar high for his following episodes. How to Cut and Paste is a turntablists dream. The album alternates between good rap songs and turntablist tracks. Yoda features various Turntablists on his album, giving them a chance to be heard. Even where they, themselves might well be legends in certain circles. Past DMC champions or finalists alike. DJ Plus one, Benny G, A Track and DJ Spinbad all get their time on the wax and it’s a pleasure to the ears. I’ve said it before in my other review of DJ Yoda’s work, but its worth saying again. Turntablism is an overlooked art form. Scratching is not simply pulling a record back and forth on a turntable platter, there’s a lot more too it and many different techniques. The title of this album “how to cut and paste” is a reference to such in itself. Cutting and pasting is a turntablist art form, taking bits of different songs/albums/films etc and lacing them together for amusing purposes. There’s also crabbing, blending, chirps, scribbles, flares, orbits etc etc (see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scratching)
Humour is strikingly pleasant, if a little rude. This disc is certainly not for the younger listeners. Delta Ebonics (which can be heard on Youtube) is actually a hilarious Delta Airlines advert in Afro-American slang. That alone is worth buying the album for (especially at its current prices). DJ Yoda meets the Thunderbirds is as humours as you can imagine as Yoda scratches alongside the theme tune to the Thunderbirds show.
Once again, DJ Yoda introduces us to a nice mix of MC’s and DJ’s, including the very talented Ugly Duckling (from Los Angeles) who have a very Jurrasic Five feel to them. MC Paul Barman is also hilarious with his bonkers lyrics and mad jibes. Both songs on here warrant buying the albums of those artists, which was probably the idea, but worth it as they are tremendous artists in their own right.
At 36 tracks long, you might be fooled into thinking this is a long album, but the scratch skits are only short and so the album ends up being a nice length. It’s a good listen, well worth the money and the splitting sides. A nice mix of rap and DJing for all comers. Frankly if I had to pick, Vol.1 and 2 are DJ Yoda’s best work.
