writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in baby-talk and so on) and records the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks-- Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson seems to channel her mother, Goldie Hawn, to slightly unnerving effect. --Bret Fetzer

Additional notes
Album Notes: The soundtrack to the sugary Kate Hudson/Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS bears an eclectic mix of artists. There are plenty of oldies but goodies ranging from Al Green's make-out anthem "Let's Stay Together" and Carly Simon's sassy "You're So Vain" to George Thorogood & The Destroyers' gut-bucket reading of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love." There's also more recent pop manna including Sixpence None The Richer's Cranberries-like "Kiss Me" and the Gin Blossom's jangly power-pop jewel "Follow You Down."

Isaac's Hayes 'Theme from Shaft' has become so much part of the film that the makers of the new movie had to include it in their soundtrack. It is not as far as I know a re-issue of the original but a re-recorded version, which to my untrained ears at least sounds almost identical to the original apart from a more slick sound production. It still sounds excellent after all these years and despite the soul sound not being the popular sound of the streets these days it does still manage to capture that cool/hip vibe that the filmmakers have tries very hard to infuse in to the movie. The Wah Wah guitar sound and the distinctive Motown high hat are all still there and compare...

Advantages: not many Disadvantages: it's too like the shrew
..."10 Things I Hate About You" is "The Taming Of The Shrew" rejigged for teens. The script (Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith) owes less to Will the Quill than to been-there cynicism. These kids have no illusions. Life is a role play, in which suckers are sucked and tough chicks don't work with safety nets.
At the beginning, wit ricochets off the walls. As Kat softens and Patrick puts on a tux, the movie loses its spark. You begin to notice the songs on the soundtrack -- always a bad sign. The actors are unknown, with the exception of Miller, who is always an asset to any comedy. As an ensemble piece, it is fresh and funny. As for Shakespeare, he suffers the same fate Jane Austen did in "Clueless"; but you don't have to know "The Shrew" to enjoy "10 Things"....

I bought this soundtrack in the late 80's after watching the film - I have always been a huge fan of Mickey Rourke and think that Angel Heart is at least in his top 3 best films.
The music in the film perfectly matches the visuals and is one of the best examples of music actually creating an atmosphere for a film as well as adding to it.
The jazzy, New Orleans instrumentals like Harry Angel that reappear throughout the film are stunning as are the old bluesy songs that crop up when Harry goes searching for the errant crooner Johnny Favourite...
