Within the last year Muse have become one of the most talked about bands, each album they release they recieve a new breed and mass following of fans around the planet.
This album is usually overlooked by many the new fan - and if you are one of them i suggest you dont! Strictly speaking it is a collection of "bsides and live tracks", dont let the name tag fool you, the hidden gems of muse's backcatalogue are found on this very cd! It is the soundtrack to the Hullabaloo tour - "origins of symmetry period", and i highly recommend the dvd that can be purchased as well.........
This cd proves how unique muse are, how edgy even with the most mournful sounding acoustic songs "hyper chondriac music" ( acoustic version of hyper music), which is to this day my favourite muse song.
Side A contains the bsides and hidden gems, if you value complexity within your music as with most muse albums this will not disappoint.
It starts with "Forced in" - one they played on their recent tour ( which i was lucky to go to :). It sounds like a hallucination in a song. PLayed as an instrumental live, it has a dreamlike feel to it.
"shrinking universe" continues the sci fi feel of "origins", with a hidden meaning to the lyrics, with flowing piano melodies, rhythmic drums and exagerrative lyrics, ending on an explosive climax, enhancing matt bellamys amazing voice.
"Recess" contains such a piercing unique guitar riff, again a song with a hallucinative feel to it.
"Yes please" is typical heavy guitars and pounding drums, of a good heavy rock song muse pull off with ease, yet it has a quirky edge.
Then "map of your head :)" sounds almost sexually charged, until the acoustic guitar comes in....possibly second best song off entire album. It is very unpredictable.....
"Nature 1" is full of lyrics with anguish, you can almost feel Bellamy tearing the acoustic guitar to pieces the speed he plays it.
"Shine acoustic" starts off with fairground noise....and continues to be almost ballad like ( muse style obviously....)
"Ashamed" is heavy heavy heavy. One to jump around to :)
"The gallery" is the second instrumental, the piano being more of the centre piece, yet it still feels space age and futuristic.
Now "hyper chondriac music" is undescribable, yes its an altered version of "hyper music" but its sooo much better :) It is melancholy yet ambiguous - its not exactly light hearted - but it transports you, i really cant describe it you'll have to listen. It could make you feel anything you want it to depends how you interpret it.
Side B contains live versions off the Hullabaloo dvd - listen to dead star and agitated they are very good. You almost feel like you were there :)
Out of the four studio albums + this album i rank it number two to be honest, its perfect.
You need it if your a new fan, just into progressive styles of music or just relisten to it if your an old fan! an value how unqiue this awesome bands really are.
Thanks for the read...if you read it all :P
