Being a huge fan of snow patrol since Final Straw, I have enjoyed their music on every occasion, however I am NOT a fan of Leona Lewis' rendition of Run, her voice is amazing, but doesn't suit the song at all.
Eyes Open was a fantastic release, full of powerful songs, optimistic chorus, and soul gripping crescendo. However, I think we all became bored of the constant radio and TV play of Chasing Cars (although every couple in the world still name it as "their song").
Having eagerly awaited Hundred Million Suns for a while, I thought it unlikely that it would topple Eyes Open as their peak album, and I have to say, I was right. The music is great, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't seem to have the passion of their previous releases; each song still has that original indie/poppy sound that Snow Patrol excel in, but you cant help but feel that each track feels slightly generic.
The opening track, breaks you in to the album successfully, maybe not as You're all I have, or How to be dead, but it still succeeds in drawing you into the album. The second song is frankly awful, it sounds like an awful marriage between The Feeling and Take That, and doesn't work at all. It almost seems their new answer to Chasing Cars, but doesn't succeed in the slightest. Take Back That City is the first stand out track, and seems to digress into their earlier style, with an uplifting beat and ellipsis style chorus, offering a great sing along song for all! The subsequent tracks, Lifeboats and The Golden Floor offer a more contemporary sound, competing for chart success with the likes of James Morrison or James Blunt.
The second half the album is a mixed bag of new style and old, Song six seems to be a trip back to Eyes Open, and sounds much like Headlights on Dark roads, which is a good thing, as it was one of their strongest efforts on that album. However, the rest of the album seems much more relaxed, offering rich bass and acoustic guitars, with the Snow Patrol crescendo.
Its hard to fault any of the songs, but Snow Patrol have had their peak album, and it seemed unlikely they would better it. However, I would recommend this album, and it may grow on this reviewer more as time goes by, but for now, Eyes Open will have priority on the play list.
