Advantages: A solid ensemble of actors. Disadvantages: A lack of emotional depth and sometimes clumsy direction.
; a tedious, didactic subtitled epilogue about the true nature of heroism that is so crass it really stuck in my craw.
The screenplay by William Broyles Jr and "Crash" scribe Paul Haggis tries to have too broad a scope. You're constantly flitting between time-lines, which makes it nigh on impossible to engage emotionally with the three main characters. The subplot about one soldier's son trying to discover more about his father's role in historic events feels unnecessary. It jars with the rest of the movie and does little other than add length to the running time, making it a crippling hundred-and-thirty-two minutes long.
