withThe Hush. Attributing the Motown sound as a major influence, Texas's sound is heavily influenced by contemporary American R&B. Now, when we think of Motown, the wordsoulis immediately evoked, but Texas's sound is about as far away from true soul as Dallas is from the band's hometown of Glasgow. Not that they don't try. The chorus on the opening track of "In Our Lifetime" is a too-close-for-comfort imitation of the chorus from TLC's single "Creep." On "Tell Me the Answer" frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri emulates Prince's falsetto à la "Kiss." But her voice is an overproduced, emotional flatliner that lacks the bump and grind that TLC and Prince deliver. However, the album is adorned with lush, grand instrumental arrangements typical of fine Britpop--making Texas the bride to, say, Robbie Williams's groom.--Beth Massa

Texas gave themselves a tough task in trying to live up to their previous album, White On Blonde, but The Hush is certainly an album they can be proud of.
There are a number of excellent tracks, most notably “Summer Son”. Singles “When We Are Together” and “Once In A Lifetime” also feature, although once again it is some of the less heralded tracks which shine through, most notably “Day After Day”.
The tracks are excellent, again showing a diversity many groups do not have. It is not just the music which is versatile, as Sharleen Spiteri’s voice is the perfect foil on all the tracks. It can be either punchy or mellow, although I dare say that her part in the songwriting process helps this along.
An excellent CD and one which you’ll have no trouble listening to over and over again.
Advantages: few really good songs Disadvantages: some not-so-good somgs
I bought this album because it had been recommended by a lot of magazines but when i got it i was relally quite dissapointed by it. I just really liked the songs that had been released as singles- I think Summer son was really good and In Our lifetime was a massive hit for them. the album didn't really change throughout it, and I got a bit bored by the end. it'd be good for all the "cool" parents out there. The Hush went down really well, and Texas ...

This is the recent album they have out (up until 30/8/2000), and I think most of the singles on it have been released now. My favourite song on the album is ‘In our lifetime’, (the one with the freaky stairs on the video). There are still a couple of similar sounding ones but on the whole it’s the better album. ‘Summer Son’, ‘When we are together’ and ‘In our Lifetime’ would be the most popular ... ...but have added extras like intriguing videos and a touch of soul.
Tracks include:
In Our Lifetime Tell Me The Answer Summer Son Sunday Afternoon Move In When We Are Together Day After Day Zero Zero Saint
Girl
The Hush The Day Before I Went Away ...

Advantages: The perfect follow up to "White On Blonde" Disadvantages: Possibly a bit overproduced
There are just some albums that complement Winter (Portishead) and some (Texas) that complement Summer. Sharleen's warm breezy vocals yet again are wonderful on the follow up to the successful CD "White On Blonde". In fact "When We Are Together" has a similar style to "White On Blonde". However, the rest of album is a progression from the previous album. "Sunday Afternoon" and "Move In" are beautiful subtle tracks whilst "Summer Son" and "Saint" ...

Texas in my opinion had a massive job to do to follow 'White on Blonde' and although the album is very good I do not think its as good as White on Blonde. There are a couple of catchy tunes and singles for example 'In Our Lifetime' and 'Summer Son'. To me the album is more likely to be remembered by the video of Summer Son where Sharleen Spiteri does a fantastic job of being made love to by the Sun - hot. Its still worth a listen to please do not ...

The latest album from Texas is truly great. There is a variety of songs, from sad and slow songs to quick songs such as Summer Sun. The album has 12 songs and the best song on there for me is 'When We Are Together' but each song is as good as the other. The album is only &10 and is definetly worth it. You will never be bored of it. The only drawback is that it doesn't have numering on the tracks. All over it is a well worth the time it takes you ...

Advantages: all your faves! It's Texas! Relaxing, soothing, and at times even moving! Disadvantages: last song is a complete waste of time
...Only with White on Blonde did I really begin to appreciate Texas, and their follow up album, the Hush, was no disappointment.
It's hard to describe Texas really. The front woman, Sharleen Spiteri(I've spelt that wrong haven't I?), has an exceptionally clear voice, it's deep and sultry really, and accompanies the music the rest of the band play perfectly. The album does consist mostly of their recent hits, but starts of well with 'I don't want a lover...' which is my earliest recollection of the band. Hearing other hits that aren't off their last two albums shows a certain change in style, and for the better, although their earlier hits were by no means bad.
The inclusion of their two most recent songs(not on any other album) is also a real treat, because personally they are my favourite tracks ever released by the band...

Advantages: A perfect potted history of an enduring pop band's mixed career Disadvantages: Early releases are largely ignored, and it's definitely tailored to their new-found audience that came onboard with White On Blonde
...Having re-invented themselves with such staggering success, Texas have taken the natural, and obvious, approach with this this perfectly-timed Greatest Hits CD.
1999's The Hush proved that White On Blonde's achievements were no fluke, and wisely this CD plays to their commercial strengths, even if it does attempt to rewrite their past in the process.
With a bounty of recent Top 20 hit singles to choose from, it was never on the cards that Texas would seek to include some of their earlier, rockier, releases. And so the absence of In My Heart, You Owe It All To Me and Thrill Is Gone is not unexpected.
The 3 new recordings, including the so-so Top 10 single In Demand, all point towards a greater emphasis on club sounds in their music, with Inner Smile bordering on joyous disco.
By arranging the tracks in a mon...

Advantages: Makes you feel happy Disadvantages: Not long enough
...Red Book sees a very different Texas to the previous albums 'Be Careful What You Wish For' and 'The Hush'. More time seems to have been spent on getting things just right, the result is the most complete album I have heard for a long time.
The album starts incredibly strongly with the singles 'Getaway' and 'Can't Resist'. Both catchy and after one listen they will be stuck in your head. 'What About Us?' is an incredibly moving and haunting track; full of emotion, reminiscent of Kate Bush. 'Sleep' sees a rarely used technique utilised by texas: a duet, and it works.
This album stands up well to repeat listening, I have been listening non stop for two weeks. It is an album which has no weaknesses.
The best thing about this album is its ability with every song to convey the emotion felt by the members whilst writing these tracks...

Album Notes: Texas includes: Sharleen Spiteri (vocals); Johnny McElhone, Eddie Campbell, Ally McErlaine. Producers: Johnny McElhone, Rae & Christian, The Boilerhouse Boys. This sultry summer album from Texas proves that WHITE ON BLONDE, the band's triumphant return to the big stage in 1997, was no fluke. If anything, THE HUSH is even more assured, even more polished, and even more laden with the sort of catchy melodies and gorgeous textures that brought Texas to the spotlight in the first place. Sharleen Spiteri has likened this album to Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS in terms of Texas' career development, and given her vocal performance it's hard to disagree. Try "Tell Me the Answer" for an extraordinary falsetto sound, fraught yet sensual. The British radio hits "Once in a Lifetime" and "When We Are Together" will get under your skin immediately with their Motown flavorings. The up-tempo hit "Summer Son" will set your toes tapping. Toward the end of the album, a more chilled, soulful side prevails in numbers like "Saint" and "The Day Before I Went Away." Production throughout is immaculate, with a sheen of strings and a collage of keyboard timbres. THE HUSH will leave a warm glow in your heart and a smile on your face!

Rolling Stone (6/10/99, p.120) - 3 1/2 out of 5 - "...the time is right for HUSH - imagine a Scottish Diana Ross smoldering over swanky beats that fall somewhere between Britney Spears and Portishead, Eurythmics and Lisa Stansfield....All sleek art and hot pop - what could be more 1999?" Q (6/99, p.98) - 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent - "...sounds learned, rich and confident....a crowd-pleaser whose at-home breeziness and aplomb increase its urgency to entertain....Texas may prove to be as essential to pop as Manic Street Preachers are to rock." Mojo (6/99, p.96) - "...All slur and slide, electronic sounds and beats subtly mingled with human softness, THE HUSH parades potential hits one after another.....founder-bassist Johnny McElhone's first solo production is a svelte masterwork." Billboard (6/5/99, p.19) - "...an assertive album that showcases the sensuous vocals of...Sharleen Spiteri and the band's ability to craft soulful, melodic, and timeless pop songs steeped in R&B influences....brims with potential..."
