I first saw this band on CD:UK’s hotshots, and even after just seeing a short clip from their video I knew that they were going to be a rock band that I was going to like.
You probably do not know much about the band, so here is a list of the members and what they play:
What hits you after reading that? Nothing? Read it again… now what hits you? Yes, all have a vocal part to play, and this is a rock band with samples. The only other case of this sampling inclusion that stands out in my mind is Garbage, and yes, there is a slight similarity in the way the bands use sampling.
The album through and through is great.
The twelve tracks only add up to about thirty-seven minutes, which is a good and bad thing. It is bad because this is not very long, and more of the same would make an even greater album, but, like Blink 182’s Enema Of The State, you will get to know the songs very well, and will enjoy the album more. Some albums are too long, and with the vast amount of time comes a slight reluctance to play it too much. I find that anyway!
The album contains some very good lyrics. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a rock band that can write good lyrics as well as good music. The lyrics, once heard a couple of times, become very meaningful, and the sheer screaming of some of the vocals seems to put more emphasis on the lyrics. The emotions within the songs really do come out with this type of vocals. With a main singer and backing singers, the tracks seem to gain something extra, like although sung from a single persons view, the lyrics apply to the band, and not just the vocalist. With a bit of Emceeing also, you will not get bored with the way the words are sung. I think the variation really is the key here. Oh, and there are no swear words in this album at all! Good for the concerned parents out there!
The album mainly relies on this quiet verse, exploding chorus theme, very popular with bands at the moment, very easy to see why! This works tremendously well on this album. The sampling involved gives the album some kind of unique feel to it. The beats from a machine rather then a drum or bass seem to blend in quite normally, and you will not really notice them too much. There are both very fast and some quite slow songs, which again, gives the album variety.
The bands first single released from this album, One Step Closer, is possibly my favourite on the album. It was written when the band were in the recording studio. If you listen to the words, and apply it to the situation where a band are trying to make music, write lyrics, and are getting on each others nerves, you can see how this song came about! I am sure that most people can relate to this song, getting close to the point where you are just about to explode at someone! I read somewhere this band throws fruit at each other when arguing!
Cure For The Itch is a dance track on the album, quite a dark track, and the reason I mention this is because I reckon the title is to do with the fact that this rock outfit have two DJ type people, and they must have been itching to do something like this dance track! It is a bit dark, like something from the Matrix soundtrack, but do not skip it!
The cover and inlay is good, has all the words if you want to know them, but my inlay smells really bad! Dodgy material it was made from I think! Does anyone else have this problem? The inlay contains thankyou’s, and a few pictures of the lads.
Overall, a very good debut album from a promising band, look out for their next single out, possibly called Crawling. The album may take a few plays to get used to, but at thirty-seven minutes it won’t take up that much of your time!
P.S. An observation: Marilyn Manson has a song called "Rock is Dead" on the Matrix soundtrack. My ass is it!
