Linkin Park take a lot of criticism from various sections of the population. Some say they are too loud, some say they are unoriginal, others say they are just plain crap. Me, I quite like them.
I always find it hard to classify music in to one genre and Linkin Park are no different. I would at a guess say they are primarily (?hard?) rock with a bit of hip hop thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately for Linkin Park they are seen (by people I know anyway) as just the wrong side of rock. By this I mean they are classed as something the metal heads (or goths) listen to. Not that I'm saying that’s bad but by their very nature metal heads or goths aren't mainstream and it doesn't do Linkin Park any good in terms of their image with the general public.
The band used to be called Hybrid Theory and it is a well known rumour that they changed their name so they would appear next to Limp Bizkit in the record stores. Who knows if they did or not, but all I can say is that something has made them come in to the limelight. I had never heard of Hybrid Theory but I have heard
of Linkin Park so obviously something they did worked. This is the bands first major album, although I am unsure what success they had under their previous name.
Not knowing anything about the band I made an effort to see who they were. It turns out the band consist of 5 guys; Brad Delson, Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, DJ Joseph Hahn and Chester Bennington. One of them even has red hair (but I don't know why I told you that).
A lot of their success can be put down to a track they released as a single in this country, called 'One Step Closer'. Unusually for a group of this type it did reasonably well in the charts (I think around 20 ish) but more importantly it got a lot of radio play, at least on Radio 1.
On buying the album I didn't know what to expect. I had managed to play all my Red Hot Chilli Pepper and Offspring albums to death so was in need of something new to listen to while plodding along with my mounting A-level work. At the same time I got 'Infest' by Papa Roach and while that turned out to be a bit of a disappointment I absolutely loved Linkin Park's album, 'Hybrid Theory'.
Personally I don't think they scream at all. Infact I would have to say that some of their tracks have quite a nice melody. Then again I say the same thing about Marilyn Manson. It's all a matter of taste.
The album is one of those great ones though, that you can listen to from start to finish. It is 12 tracks of great rock music from start to finish and with the possible exception of 1 or 2 tracks they are all good. You can say what you like about mainstream artists but when I used to listen to the music from the pop charts (when I was younger) every album I bought fell in to the pattern of having three good tracks which got released as singles and the rest were awful. Since finding an interest in hip hop/rock/metal I have found so many great albums, from the Chilli Peppers to the Offspring and now Linkin Park.
On popping the CD in the player you may be think for about 3 seconds that you are listening to the start of something else, but once the beat kicks in and the first wave of guitars and drums kick in you better be ready for a non stop rollercoaster ride of rock.
The album contains 12 tracks most of which are for the most part rock in style although there is also the odd slower 'hip hop' track in the album too.
The album opens with two bangin' rock tunes, 'Papercut' and 'One Step Closer'. Both are suitably loud to disturb the neighbours but also have that sing along effect (albeit in a rather loud way!). These are followed by 'With You' and 'Points of Authority' which are much more mellow than the first two tracks although Steps they certainly aren't! Fear not though all you rock lovers as these two tame tunes are followed by one of the albums noisiest and most head banging track, 'Crawling'. The track starts off slowly but soon builds in to a rather loud chorus. The 6th and 7th track ('Runaway' and 'By Myself') follows in the same vein, but 'In the End' has a much more hip hop feel to it with a rock chorus. 'A Place for my Head' also has that hip hop feel but also features a 'scream your lungs out' chorus. Track 10 ('Forgotten') gets right back in to heavy rock feel intertwined with some hip hop verses. 'Cure for The Itch' is a much more instrumental track than the others, somewhat the ugly duckling of the album. 'Pushing Me Away' is a great track to finish the album. Sing-a-long hard rock is how I would describe it.
Infact the whole album could be described as sing-a-long hard rock with some hip hop elements thrown in for good measure!!
I like the album a lot, and it hasn't left my CD player (it only holds 3 discs) since the day I bought it. That’s the best recommendation I can give an album!! It has to compete with greats such as the Chilli Peppers, Offspring and even good old Paul Simon.
I like it and you never know, you might too!
