I'm from Sheffield, the home town of Def Leppard, and I have followed them for many years. They are Sheffield's biggest export, and one of Britain's most successful bands in America. Even the loss of an arm for the drummer did not prevent this band from excelling at what they do.
Hysteria was the album that really made them international superstars. Their blend of heavy and light rock, some decent lyrics, and some amazing harmonies, combined to make them different from all the other 'rock' bands of the 80s and 90s.
It's a testament to their tenacity and class that they are still around today. Throughout their careers they have been dogged by tragedy, losing one member, and having a drummer lose an arm. Regardless of the pitfalls, they fought back and became a classic band of the 80s 90s and the new millenium.
Hysteria is perhaps their best album so far, the other really are just variations on Hysteria, catapulting them up the British and America charts with classic rock anthems such as Armageddon It, Pour Some sugar on Me and the odd love ballad like Love Bites. The best song on the album is probably the title track, Hysteria, which has great rhythm, excellent guitar, and superb lyrics!
The combination of the different styles, moving from slow ballads to heavy rock show the bast talent the band has and their ability to adapt to different sounds. Unlike a lot of bands of the 80s they do not rely on the 'scream' but use wonderful vocals that are akin to Bon Jovi
This album is a must for all rock fans and is one of my top ten albums of all time!

I played this album more than any other between 1987 and 1989..it just has that "great-whatever-your-mood" quality. A shame they never really maintained the same level of success, although the follow-up was a decent attempt to replicate Hysteria.
