Leann Rimes - I Need You

(1) I Need You

"I need you like water, like breathe, like rain."

A relatively slow ballad, which is typical of Leann's country style of music. A 'male dependent' song, like 'How Do I Live', and most of the tunes on this album. Due to be release as a single soon. I'll let you know when. Definitely should make it into the top 5, I know I'll buy it. Sounds like it should be on the soundtrack for Dawson's Creek, probably is.

(2) But I Do Love You

"I don't like to be alone at night. And I don't like to hear I'm wrong when I'm right. And I don't like to have the rain on my shoes but I do love you"

Taken from the sound track of Coyote Ugly. The first bit played on the acoustic guitar is what they used on the trailer. This is the sort of song you sing in the shower, or when you're driving. Very addictive.

(3) You Are
"You are the potential in me. You are the my strongest link. You are everything I ever wanted to be"

Yet another 'I am dependant on a man' track. Would sound great with a club remix. With Anne Robinson "saying you are the weakest link".

(4) Soon

"Soon baby, I will cry my last tears soon, I will be over you"

A breakup song. I don't think this is good enough to be released, but would sound alright as a B Track.

(5) Can't Fight The Moonlight

"You can try to resist, try to hide from my kiss. But you know, but you know that you, can't fight the moonlight"

This is Leann's new grown up style of music. Less country and western, and more pop. I think it is one of the best song on the album because of this, and was the reason I went to see Coyote Ugly. This is more girl power than Leann's other songs, but I think that's more to do with the film than anything else. This is the one that Leann sung as a cameo, dancing on the bar top.

(6) Love Must Be Telling Me Something

"Love must be telling me something, giving me some kind of sign. Spelling it out for me, it must be telling me, I must be falling tonight"

Another B track song. The song grows on you, but it doesn't sound quite right with Leann singing it. It would probably sound better with someone else singing it.

(7) Written In The Stars (Duet with Elton John)

"Is it written in the stars? Are we paying for some crime? Is it all that we are good for, just a stretch of mortal time? Is this God's experiment, in which we have no say? In which we're given paradise, if only for a day."

Now this is a really interesting song. It was originally released as a single with Elton singing the first part, and Leann the second. This version is the way it should be sung, like it was written by Elton and Tim Rice for the musical Aida. This is a sad song when you know the story behind the words. I actually cried, the first time I heard it after reading the story. But then I am a soppy mare. Aida is a slave girl who Radames, an Egyptian prince falls in love with, when he is already betrothed to the Princess Amneris. The first lines, "I am here to tell you, we can never meet again", is when Aida come to tell Radames they are being separated forever. The story ends with the lovers being sealed in a tomb together. Want a tissue? I prefer the version that was released as a single, as it sounds better with Elton John starting the song. But this one is still great to listen to.

(8) One Of These Days

"One of these days I'll be completely over you. Heaven knows how long it will take"

Another break up song. But Leann does them in style. I think this is another B track song. I can't think of much to say about it, which isn't a good sign.

(9) I Believe In You

"I believe in you, and nothing less. I believe in you, can't help yourself"

This one is going to be a hit. Somewhere in the top ten, I predict. Another song that sounds like it should be on a soundtrack.

(10) Together, Forever, Always

"Together, forever always, from the dawn till the end each day"

Soppy, love song, the sort that is played and the end of a party. Delightful waltz, so good for dancing. I hate this type of song, but is a good track for the end of the album.

In Conclusion
I've been a fan of Leann Rimes for quite a while now, brought a few of her singles. But I've never got around to buying an album. I haven't regretting buying this one.
A lot of Ms Rimes' songs sound the same. She is the dependant victim of some man. (I Need You, You Are, But I Do Love You, etc) But that is her style of music and it works for her. You can't argue with countless Grammy's and millions in the bank. Its probably because she is still so young. Maybe when she is older, she'll break free and write her own songs from life experience.
Some of the tracks are from films or musicals. (But I Do Love You, Can't Fight The Moonlight, Written In The Stars) This is a way of getting people to buy songs from a country singer, and I commend her PR company for it. However she has gone a long way from that teenage country girl image as her performance in Coyote Ugly has proved. As well as the picture on the front of the album.
There are a few below average songs on this track, (Soon, One Of These Days, Love Must Be Telling Me Something) but there are always a few on an album you don't like. They would make good B tracks though.
My favourite tracks, (I Need You, Can't Fight The Moonlight, Written In The Stars) prove that Leann can break out of her genre when she wants to, and can make a success of it. If you are a Leann Rimes fan, you're going to buy this anyway. But If you're not, then I would definitely recommend buying it to find out what all the hype is about. Can't Fight The Moonlight was number one in the UK, and there are a couple of others that I think will be hits as well. The only downside to this album is that there are not lyrics inside the cover. You can't hear some of the words because of her American drawl. But you can get them off the net somewhere. But other that that, brilliant.
