pop music. Oldham's forte, murder ballads, anti-spirituals, dead-sea chanteys, and lost-love songs, has always been "difficult", forcing the listener to confront some rather unseemly topics. Say this about Oldham, however, despite his quirks (cracking vocals, shambolic instrumentation, baroque language), at its best, his music is bracing and, often, very beautiful. That said,I See a Darkness, his second LP since abandoning the Palace moniker, is the most accessible, gorgeous, and moving record of his career. Instead of the gothic, low-fi country feel of many of his projects,Darknesscomes off sounding like an early-1970s Neil Young album, comprised of a stately piano backbone and fleshed out by loose-fitting guitar strums. Stylistically, Oldham mixes things up onDarknessand his full band sounds, for once, well practiced and well recorded. Sure, Oldham is still singing about the blackness of his soul, but in between--in small bursting moments--there are bits of light, hope, and a suggestion that maybe--just maybe--there may be redemption through love. That message, presented in these carefully constructed, gently offered songs, pushes this recording beyond the usual, curious appeal of Oldham and into an entirely new realm of greatness.--S. Duda

Advantages: Beatufiul reinterpreataions, heartleft vocals, great songs Disadvantages: perhaps a little too nashville slick on occasion
Will Oldham has had a number of personas over the years and has worked under the names Palace brothers, Palace Music, Will Olham and BonniePrinceBilly (amongst others I'm sure). This release comes under BonniePrinceBilly but is the least BonnieprinceBilly sounding album he has made... and for that matter the least Will Oldham sounding album. This is glorious, unadulterated country music. What it shows off is how good and versatile Oldham's song writing actually is. These songs are all reimaginations and rearrangements of songs previously recorded under his palace guise. As Palace they were lo-fi, discordant and mostly inaccessible. Here they are lush and beautiful thanks to the help of producer Mark Nevers (of Lambchop) and an array of Nashville's best session players. Many see this record as an Oldham prank or parody country album ...
Advantages: good price, great plot Disadvantages: slightly disappointed with the end
Barefoot in the Dark by Lynne Barrett-Lee
It's a very long time since I've done a book review. When I was doing my degree, I didn't feel like reading for fun. I had too much coursework to read and also studying about how things are structured and made, took the fun out of read as I was just analysing books by their structure and their underlying themes etc. Luckily, I've learned to turn the analysing bit of my brain off and just enjoy the book so here we go.
I happened to spot this on Amazon.co.uk for £4 when I was hunting for some chicklit or bargain books that would take my fancy. It was the title that attracted me to it first and then the funky design on the front cover of a purple trainer in some daffodils, a radio and some headphones and love hearts scattered all around. There and then, I bought this book on a whim ...
Advantages: Great day out Disadvantages: Easy for foolish people to get lost !
learn more about any given castle when walking around with a guide, but I also like to walk at my own pace. When you are walking with a group I find I often want to stop and examine something, but the rest of the group is moving on, or vice versa, and I?m stood around waiting whilst other people are looking at things. However, in this case I can certainly understand why the castle has insisted on guided tours. Incidentally the painting was found again four years later, after police intercepted a gang attempting to move the painting.
The castle of course contains a huge amount of historically significant items. There are tapestries that Mary Queen of Scots worked on, paintings by Van Dyck, there is the bedroom once used by BonniePrince Charlie.

Album Notes
Personnel: Will Oldham, Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon, Paul Oldham, Peter Townshend. After abandoning the Palace moniker for a straight-up solo career, Will Oldham seemed to lose his focus a bit, but rechristened as Bonnie Prince Billy, he's regained it in spades. Where his previous solo efforts sounded thrown-together and lacked real songcraft, I SEE A DARKNESS is probably Oldham's most consistent, rewarding batch of songs since the Palace Brothers '93 debut. For once, the ever-elusive Oldham sounds like he's making a genuine effort to communicate--the relatively straightforward (but still poetic) lyrics, nicely arranged (but still lo-fi) sonic backdrops, and song structures with hummable (!) choruses are all unprecedented and highly agreeable developments. The titular darkness pervades much of the album, but there's an underlying warmth that shines through, making this an emotionally well-balanced effort.
Album Reviews
Mojo (1/99, p.99) - "...harrowing gothic-folk at its darkest. A quiet gem for those chill, midwinter evenings." Dirty Linen (2-3/00, p.93) - "...Here is Will Oldham again with more name changes and more cryptic packaging. There is a dark quality to the songs....quasiminimalist..."
