Hands up who remembers the video for the Supergrass mega hit "Alright", Well for those that don't the video basically featured Gaz and the Lads on some Bikes and a Bed going down hills and the like whilst singing about being young and being free. At the time the album went in at number 1 and the single at No. 2.

Well it wasn't till years later in fact about 6 months ago until I finally gave in to the urge and bought a copy of I Should Coco. I didn't really know what to expect as I'd only ever actually heard "Alright" and "Caught By The Fuzz". Well to be fair to the lads I certainly wasn't disappointed as the album was a lot better than I had expected.

So who are Supergrass I hear you ask, well for anyone that doesn't know they are three mates from deepest Darkest Oxfordshire who sprang onto the scene in 1995. They are now onto the fourth album in the set but a return to where it all started in 1995 seemed an appropriate place to start this op.

Tracks:

1) I’d Like To Know
2) Caught By The Fuzz
3) Mansize Rooster
4) Alright
5) Lose it
6) Lenny
7) Strange Ones
8) Sitting Up Straight
9) She’s So Loose
10) We’re Not Supposed To
11) Time
12) Sofa (of my Lethargy)
13) Time To Go

Track 1: I’d Like To Know
**********************

The song kicks of the album with the clicking of drum sticks before a very fast up-beat intro. A superb way to start the album as it is very lively and really prepares you for what’s to come. The chorus is very simple if you fancy joining in with it. The Guitars and drums keep a fantastic beat all the way through for a real feel good song. But make sure you remember this song as another of the tracks on the album is along similar lines.

Track 2: Caught By The Fuzz
************************

This has to be my favourite Supergrass song as it is up-beat and just generally a great song to listen to. A song, which won the band an army of loyal core fans. The guitar and drum intro carries on where the last track left off. The lyrics are fairly simple and easy to sing along to. The songs basically from three points of view about a kid getting arrested for having drugs in his possession.

Track 3: Mansize Rooster
*********************

A simple Drum-beat intro before a keyboard comes in and the song carries along with a simple tune before it flattens out a bit with the chorus. Again the lyrics are pretty simple and Gaz’s vocals really do make it sound like a summer type of song. The song follows the same sort of pattern throughout and is just one of those you love listening to when you get the chance.

Track 4: Alright
*************

Well here it is the biggest Supergrass hit to-date, Alright is a song that I’m sure every single person on this site will have heard at some point. It starts with a piano intro before the vocals come in for another fantastic summer song, which I’m sure will have memories attached for everyone as I know it does for me. Again like most of the other songs on this album the lyrics are easy to remember and even easier to get carried away singing along to in the car.

Track 5: Lose it
*************

This is a little bit down-beat as you would expect after a hyper song like Alright. Sounds a bit like the stuff on “In It For The Money”. A bit darker and slower but still with catchy lyrics and an easy beat to tap along to. Still a good song in its own right but probably overshadowed as it has the task of following on from the biggest single.

Track 6: Lenny
************

A solid drum-beat with a bass intro for about 25 seconds before it kicks of into a fairly catchy song when the lyrics come in. Gaz’s vocals sound superb on this track and really make it into more than it should be. A good beat and just generally a song you enjoy listening to when it comes on. Although I don’t think there is one song on this album I would skip as they are all good songs in their own right.

Track 7: Strange Ones
******************

A strange dark eerie intro with some weird samples as we go into this track, then it suddenly kicks off into a follow on from track one telling you about a place the Strange ones go. Its a lot darker again than a lot of the album but is a nice change as it wouldn’t be as good if it was all the same. Of course the song does have some moments where it is happy go lucky in the chorus before going darker for the chorus.

Track 8: Sitting Up Straight
***********************

This again has a strange intro with a piano before the song kicks off a little further in with another up-beat track. The drums and Guitar give a great beat for the song to follow with Gaz’s lyrics in full flow making this a very enjoyable song. The advantage Supergrass seem to have is that they can make music people really do enjoy and mix in a bit of darker rock in there as well.

Track 9: She’s So Loose
********************.

This song takes it down a few steps to a mellower feel with a slow drum and guitars and echolike vocals. The lyrics are a little different again from anything else on the album and would sound like a different band entirely if it wasn’t for Gaz’s vocals. A great solo spot by the guitars and a really good instrumental towards the end of the song really adds to the album.

Track 10: We’re Not Supposed To
************************

This song is across between Supergrass and The Chipmunks. The song starts with a little bit of chatter before the guitars start up and Gaz comes in sounding like Alvin from the Chipmunks. A very catchy tune with a comical touch, which just makes you sit there and actually want to listen to it even though you think it does sound a bit silly.

Track 11: Time
************

This track leads straight in from the Chipmunk end to the last song with a slow guitar before the drums and vocals come in. The song is quite slow and a nice one to chill out and relax to. It carries on the same throughout and again is a different angle from the band and brakes up all the faster upbeat tracks.

Track 12: Sofa (Of My Lethargy)
***************************

Another slower song as we start to get towards the end of the album. It starts with a musical intro before the vocals come in slowly and quietly. Its almost like a relaxing end to an album that has been full of fast beats and happy go lucky songs. An odd title for the song but it does still sound quite good. Like the last track it is a relaxed song but does have a louder faster bit in the middle before returning to Clam and collected.

Track 13: Time To Go
******************

Well as the title suggests it is the last track and starts with an Oasis style introduction before Gaz comes in and basically the lyrics are thanking everyone and saying good bye. The song follows a similar pattern through out although I did lie earlier sometimes I do skip this song altogether but it is alright to listen to every now and again as it is quite short.

Well there you have it that was Supergrass’s debut album I Should Coco, which is available from all good record stores and also from www.play247.com for £9.99. So if you liked Caught By the Fuzz or Alright then you will enjoy the album or even if you like some of the new stuff and haven’t hard the older then I hope you enjoy this one.
