Album Notes: Along with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and Return to Forever, Weather Report stands as one of the most influential and groundbreaking fusion groups of the 1970s. Co-led by pianist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Weather Report paved the way for a great deal of the jazz-rock experimentation that would follow. Combining elements of progressive rock and ambient music with heavy doses of '60s-era Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Weather Report's I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC is a stunning amalgamation of musical styles.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (4/27/72, p.55) - "...a beautiful, near-perfect LP...what we have here is a group that has reorganized the role of traditional rhythm section in an unusual way..."
Advantages: He was fast, acurate, good sense of rhythm Disadvantages: He's dead
...Jaco Pastorius is thought, in many circles, to be the greatest electric bass guitarist to date. He showed a talent that wasn't surpassed. When he walked up to his first producer for the first time and said "hello, my name is Jaco Pastorius and I'm the greatest bass guitarist in the world", he wasn't too convinced. But his outstanding ability was soon to be proved. His work stayed at the same quality throughout his entire career. He has worked with many different artists in many different styles, ranging from classical Jazz to modern and punk Jazz. In his time, he has worked with Weatherreport, Joni Mitchell, and has even released some solo work. But, as is the way of many of the world’s most talented people, he ended up dead long before his time. He went from being the most celebrated bass player to a beggar on the streets...

Advantages: Fascinating and varied album by one of the most gifted musicians in history. Disadvantages: Jaco is dead so no more albums like this one!! Long live Jaco!!!
...Jaco was one of the finest and most influential musicians of recent times. In developing incredible musical and technical ability on electric bass he transformed the direction and fortunes of WeatherReport.
The story of Jaco's first encounter with the great Joe Zawinul says much about the confidence of the man. "My name is Jaco Pastorius and I am the greatest bass player in the world" JZ's reply ..."get the **** out of here" (JZ had just been badly let down by another musician) but this did not put JP off and Zawinul later heard demo tapes commenting "..say kid do you also play electric bass"
Already Jaco had a unique sound, This album was an early milestone in a great career.
Many highlights on the album but "Donna Lee" duetting Jaco's fretless bass with Don Alias's congas and the magnificent solo "Portrait of Tracey" really stand...
