Advantages: Completely unique Disadvantages: Not all of it is good
...KidCreole and the Coconuts won very positive public support for their few live performances in 1980. This encouraged the band to work on a second album, Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places. The album chronicled the Kid’s search for his erstwhile lover, Mimi ( a story loosely based on August Darnell’s own experiences when his first wife left him).
Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places was ecstatically received by the British press, and Darnell hailed as a modern day soul genius. Unfortuantely the record got little radio airplay (though Me No Pop I) - a single credited to KidCreole And The Coconuts Present Coati Mundi - was a minor UK hit).

Advantages: Great uplifting tracks; defines summer; soulful; bargain Disadvantages: NONE
...KidCreole & The Coconutshave to be one of the most under-rated acts of the 1980s - they were fun, sexy, ahead of their time, dynamic and as Kid sang, "at [their] peak and that's a fact!"
Tropical Gangsters is for me their best album and certainly the best introduction as it features their three biggest hits - 'Annie I'm not your daddy,' 'stool pigeon' and 'I'm a wonderful thing baby.'
