Firstly, I have to say that I am a big fan of Pink; I have all her other albums and have admired her changing style from R&B debut "Can't Take Me Home" through to her rockier last effort "Try This". This new album is similar in style to "Try This", with a mix of pop, rock, and the softer, slower ballads but, dare I say it, seems to lack a bit of substance.
Her first single from the album, "Stupid Girls", is a great chart track without a doubt, with a catchy chorus and funny lyrics to match an hilarious video (which, if you get the DVD/Dual Disc version of the album, you'll be able to watch). It's also a typical pink song; having a little dig at the "norm" and the "dumb blonde/stupid girl" culture of today. It's one of the better tracks on the album, and I think it will be followed at some point by "U + Ure Hand" seeing as there are clips of this video being made in the interview with Pink on the bonus DVD. U + Ure Hand is basically about a girl wanting to go to a club without being bothered by any men, and it's an ok song but nothing special.
Some of the other tracks are worth mentioning for different reasons; Track 5, "Dear Mr President", was recorded with "The Indigo Girls" (who i have only ever heard of through their work with Sister Hazel on a song called "Champagne High") and is the political piece of the album; it's a sung letter to George Bush bringing up various issues and is actually quite a good listen, although perhaps not one you're going to want to listen to more than the once.
Title track "I'm Not Dead" is a decent enough tune, again a poppy rock track, but it just sounds like it's been done before as is the case with a lot of the songs.
Track 8 "Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)" is probably my favourite, it sounds like it belongs in the 80's; a fast, rocky beat and some simple lyrics combined with a memorable chorus make it one of the highlights of the album for me.
"I Got Money Now" (which to be honest I find a bit boring) is one of the slower tracks on the album, which is all rounded off by the song "I Have Seen The Rain", an acoustic duet with Pink's dad which he wrote while in Vietnam. It's quite a touching and moving end to the album, and brings all sorts of images to your head.
Overall I found this album a bit of a disappointment. I can't see too much different here from her last effort and it's more or less what I expected. While I like prefer her rockier style, a lot of the songs sound a bit strained and are pretty forgetable. I would recommend it to anybody who hasn't yet bought "Try This" but I think it's an album that needs multiple listens to appreciate some of what's on offer.
