A far from subtle but massively entertaining from the top-boy, yet strangely attractive Pink. In previous albums I've thought she was a little but pop-ghetto run of the mill, however this album (originally my girlfriends, now safety stolen) has been in my cd player for a fortnight and shows no sign of leaving.
Cover Art Pink appears to be shown in the middle of a wreath screaming at the top of her lungs (hence the 'I'm not dead'). Strangely the design and colours make me think of Jean Paul Guetierre although I'm not sure why?
The insert contains all the lyrics which I always like as it saves me having to search on the internet for the odd word I can never pick up from the song.
Tracks 1. Stupid Girls A track that's entertaining rather than inspired, Pink's first single announced the controversial nature of the album by attacking the current trend of 'IT girls' would are setting back female respect by generations with their ditsy antics. This feels like a song that needs a video to fully get the joke and when you see the mock ups of Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson on MTV you'll appreciate the lyrics more.
2. Who knew The second single released
is in stark contrast to the first and showcases Pink's versitility as she puts full emotion into a song about how she never saw her end of her relationship coming. A good tempo and sing along lyrics
3. Long way To Happy Another song about romantic break up and recovery. A catchy song but it's in the same vein as 'Who Knew' and I preferred that song
4. Nobody Knows The brilliant changes of speed and tempo make this one of the most memorable songs on the album. The topic is cliched, with Pink talking about her troubled private life behind the partying public face, however the song is still very entertaining and rises about the usual songs of this nature.
5. Dear Mr. President The political charge and venom is this song is there for all to see and my respect for Pink as an artist went up on hearing this as she doesn't appear to have done it for publicity, more speaking from the heart. My only problem with the song is that I'm from the UK and so it carries alot less resonance than for a US citizen (sorry)
6. I'm Not Dead Right in the midle of the album and again displaying excellent changes of pace, Pink talks about how she is surviving in the aftermath of a relaionship, although there is a hint of reconsiliation in this song which isn't there in the other relationship based tracks. One of my favourites
7. Cuz I Can The song is mug and although you get the feeling Pink is being very tounge in cheek over how successful she's been I don't really like this song.
8. Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely) The song fits nicely because it deals with the ideas and pressures of a long term realationship (something most people understand) and would be considered unremarkable on other albums, although with so many tracks dealing with breakup this shows the flip side of the coin.
9. U + UR Hand Very funny and another of Pink's signature 'attitude' tracks as she explains what it's like to get a cheesy chat up line from a girls perspective. I can see this being a karaoke favourite on hen nights and girls nights out, however as a male I can also see a little bit of myself in the men she barates.
10. Runaway A track about teen angst and because of that I feel I can't really get into it. I know thhis sng will have huge resonance with some people and will have a definate following amongst song of Pink's demographic, however the subject matter just doesn't relate to me and I can only call it average
11. The One That Got Away Depending on my mood this can be my favourite song on the album. It again shows Pinks versitility and her ability to be full of attitude one minute and quietly tender the next. Once again this deals with a failed romance, although this is one that never had the chance to get off the ground and although she ends it Pink recognises it could and should have been something special. For me the song is made by a simple line near the end
'I'll look for you first, in my next life'
12. I Got Money Now A nice easy listening song that I didn't like at first, however on recent listening I've started to realise the simple 'anti materialism' message and because of this the song has grown on me.
13. Converstaions with My 13 yr Old Self An original idea and fits well with some of Pnk's earlier songs about her childhood and family life (for instance 'Family Portrait'). A track based around the old adage 'If I knew then what I know now'
14. Fingers For me the cheekiest song on the album and an amusing (slightly cringe-worthy) subject matter for a male to listen to. It details what happens in the night when the boyfriend is asleep and the girlfriend unsatisfied. I'll say no more.
15. Centrefold An average enough song, and I was a little disappointed as on other albums I would have labelled this a 'filler' however with 16 tracks there is no real need for it.
16. I've seen the rain A strange but beautiful song. Apparently the vocals are done by her father which is interesting and a nice touch at the end of the album. Again a song I feel would carry more feeling and emotion to a US audience
Conclusion Most of the album is excellent and even the songs I'm not overly keen on aren't bad enough to make me skip past them. A mature and entertaining collection of songs
