For what it's worth, I thought the first three Pink albums showed a lot of originality, spirit and maturity, even to the point of blues duets with Aerosmith - really good. Pink appeared to be eschewing the wall of noise/geek syndrome and was forging her own very strong musical identity away from the mob. This is always a good sign and so when Number One daughter said she wanted the new Pink CD I was very happy to get it. OK, so the second one was not oversuccessful (hence I'm not Dead, and about eating disorders??) but it showed many of the encouraging features of the first.
God, what a disappointment. The whole CD is riddled with influences almost to the point of copying and the band that was so good and soulful on the first has been replaced with a Fall Out Boy line-up who all hammer away gormlessly at their geek punk instruments. As it now absolutely mandatory with all happening rock musicians, she has to take a pop at the American Presidency (subtley entitled Dear Mr President) - spend some time in Korea or China, girl - and Long Way to Happy is basically an unsubtle roar reminiscent of glam rock at its worst.
Relief comes when she duets with her Dad on I Have seen the Rain, but the truth is, it's such a bland song that had it been recorded by Eric Clapton it would have been laughed out of court. The One That Got Away is good - quiet, thoughtful and tuneful.
Oh God, I can't trawl through all the tracks but I will say that influences include Eddie Grant and Midnight Oil - one track is a dead ringer for Bed is Burning - you can work out which! I suppose the bottom line is that I really like Pink and think that she is genuinely inspired on the odd occasion. Her voice is pretty damn' good too, although her heavier numbers sound like Cher around the Jesse James period. Nothing wrong with that, you may say, but I prefer her sounding like Pink. The backing is, on four tracks, that relentless roar that we associate with the aforementioned Fall Out Boy, Bowling for Soup, Lifehouse and all the other identikit baby punk bands, and she does not deserve this. I am astonished that Pink cannot see the effect of this, in that it casts a pall of boredom over the whole proceedings.
Pink will not be Thomas Pynchon (thank God!) or Bob Dylan, so over-analysis of the words is pointless, although she does try. Her voice is always good as long as she avoids the temptation to "rock out" and therefore loses her ability to be subtle and tuneful.
Oh, I don't know what to do. I am so sad that I have to keep saying about certain tracks, "Who is this again?" rendering me "uncool" as always with the Heiress to the Family Debt - but I can't help it - I'm as disappointed as she is.
Pink, lose the nerds, lose the punk, lose the standard targets, team up with a bunch of old lags who really know how to do light and shade, get Andy Sheppard on sax, wheel in John Renbourn on acoustic, try Eddie Jobson on keys and violin and you will produce a six-star album that I will buy and love.
Trouble is, I'll keep buying them anyway. There is always that spark that puts her above the rest ..... Recommend? Just.
