soul's most eccentric stylist never sang more sensuously than he did on "Simply Beautiful", or on the six-and-a-half-minute country-soul meditation that is Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times". Nor did the Hi house band sound more crisply funky than on mid-tempo beauties like the title track, "Love and Happiness" or "Look What You Done For Me". As rough-hewn as it is, the sound Green and his producer Willie Mitchell craft is still mighty hard to beat. --Barney Hoskyns
Album Notes: This excellent collection finds the celebrated reggae vocalist Alton Ellis trading time in the spotlight with his sister, Hortense Ellis, one of reggae's more overlooked female singers. Beginning with his first recordings, Alton Ellis was one of the key links between American soul music of the 1960s and Jamaica's contemporaneous rock-steady movement. He and his sister are the Jamaican counterparts to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in Detroit or Otis Redding and Carla Thomas in Memphis. The list of soul classics here given the Studio One version treatment ("Can I Change My Mind," "Breakfast in Bed," "People Make the World Go Round") makes the link to the U.S. all the more apparent, but it's Hortense and Alton's lilting, soulful vocals (which unfortunately are brought together on only one track) that truly the illustrate the bond between reggae and American R&B. Rounder's 2006 reissue of the collection, originally titled ALTON & HORTENSE ELLIS, includes four extra tracks, most notably the title track, which features Hortense and Alton together.

Advantages: Beautiful swirly songs with guitars, very Hazel O Conner-ish Disadvantages: Sophie's voice falters at times, a couple of duff tracks
...” – which is so Radio 2, even Terry Wogan wouldn’t play it and “Bells For David Keenan”, which is exactly what it says it. Bells, just bells, for just over minute.), every song here could have been singles. Of course, the ones that were the singles are the best, but if you took them away you would still have been left an awesome debut album.
The first single was “I’ve Got the Wherewithal” (and yes, theaudience like long titles), a brooding melody, with a Indian strings feel, broken only by Sophie’s chipped upper class vocals
“If You Can’t Do It When You’re Young; When Can You Do It?”(Phew!), the band’s second release sounds like it was written on an extremely lazy Sunday. This song is so laid back your surprised the band didn’t fall asleep before they could finish recording it.
One of my favourite singles, the summer-ey “A Pessimist...

...Spiller the 7 foot dance producer, hits number one after massive airplay of his hit, groovejet (if this aint love) with sophie ellis baxter? On vocals this tune is a nice tempoed pop dance crossover which are proving to be such hits this year, like lady by modjo. But then you take away the vocals and up the tempo a bit and you have the dance remix, upon buying the single you find out what you have been missing. That is the background music speeded up and wow, its better. Buy the single if not only to sample the remixes....
