Advantages: Great songs, production, lyrics Disadvantages: If you don't like Leonard's voice this won't convert you
We've seen so many times that artists and songwriters who have great success throughout the 60's and the 70's often have a horrendous 80's as they try to keep up with the times. The songwriting becomes bland and the need for synthesisers means that the songs become so electronically ladened that the production becomes the focus over the songs themselves. It fills me with great pleasure to say that in the case of LeonardCohen and 'I'mYour Man' this is most certainly not the case. It could be argued that prior to this Len was having a creative crisis. The mid 70's and early 80's were just about fair to him but albums were patchy compared to his 60's output and by his own high standards. Just when we thought Len's time was up, he brought us this curious powerhouse.
The scene is set with the opening track 'First We Take Manhattan ...
Advantages: Loads of Phil Collins songs Disadvantages: Loads of Phil Collins songs messed up
- Changing Faces. Ok this isnt bad. To replicate the original should be quite simple, its a slow song with very little percussion and this track is the same. Two voices sound good on it though
All My Life - Another ok track. TQ gives it a little something and you apprechiate his efforts. Good beats
I Wish It Would Rain Down - Not a fan of Phils version let alone this one. Its just a bit bland
Take Me Home - Malik Pendleton. If you want to hear a different version of this song, Bone Thugs have a version on one of their albums which actually features Phil in the video. This is again too bland.
Overall not great. Some bigger tunes could have been attempted like Two Hearts, Physical Touch and Groovy Kind of Love but they would have probably messed those up aswell! Listen to the originals if you want your Phil fix, also considering ...
OPINION
I first heard of LeonardCohen at a friends house as a record, the song was "Suzanne" and I loved it. I remembered the name and to my delight I found his CD in the Woolworths price crunch a while back now. His songs are so calming but have lyrics that explore ideas of religion, isolation, sexuality and complex interpersonal relationships, so as calm as they seem their underlying provocations are deeply moving.
ARTISTLeonardCohen is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist. His earliest songs are rooted in European folk music, his 1970's music encompasses pop, chaberet and world music and since the 1980's his high baritone voice took on more low registers, often accompanied by electronic synthesizers and female backing singers. His writing has influenced lots of singer-songwriters and more than ...

Album Notes
Leonard Cohen's supremely literate songs will always have a rapt audience among rock and folk's illuminati. In certain circles, Cohen is regarded with the same awe as Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and a handful of other top '60s songwriters. However, the singer's dry, husky voice and his dirge-like, hypnotic vocal delivery have often confounded even the bravest listener. I'M YOUR FAN--the title is a reference to Cohen's landmark I'M YOUR MAN release of 1988--recruits an interesting, even inspired array of some of rock and pop's most uncompromising talents, presenting Leonard Cohen songs as unabashed pop. REM perform a gritty version of "First We Take Manhattan," while, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, a band clearly influenced by Cohen along the way, present an inspired version of "Tower of Song." Other standout selections include Lloyd Cole's beautiful take on "Chelsea Hotel," James' cover of "So Long Marianne," and Ian McCulloch's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye."
