After the release of Look Sharp!, and its subsequent success on both sides of the Atlantic, Joe Jackson began expounding his idea of spiv rock in order to poke fun at musical categorising. He took the idea a step further on his second album, I’m The Man, posing on the cover as a spiv - with a polka dot tie and pencil moustache - selling stolen watches.

I’m The man contained the same stripped down pop sound and biting lyrics of the debut album, and was even more successful. Released in the autumn of 1979, it reached number 12 in the British charts, gave Jackson his first Top Ten hit in the UK, It’s Different For Girls, and firmly established him in the US as one of the stars of the new wave. The highlight of the album was On The Radio; frenetic, but still melodic, this was a triumphant act of revenge. As Jackson put it: “It’s addressed to all the teachers, all the bullies, all the people who wouldn’t listen before.”
