These days good trumpeters, of whom Stripling is certainly one, abound in jazz. This is a ... more
collection of numbers associated with Louis
Armstrong--always a dependable source of good
material. Nagel-Heyer has done sterling work in
celebrating Louis, notably through the work of
trumpeter Randy Sandke and here with his
counterpart, Byron Stripling. Sandke has his own
Armstrong album (the highly
recommendedRediscovered Louis and Bix) and to
confuse things further, Sandke is present on seven
of these tracks. But he doesn't solo, confining
himself to playing unison and harmony passages
with Stripling. Stripling, who doesn't copy
Armstrong except when he sings, plays with
authority and verve, and even the often-played
standards sound fresh. The tracks are drawn from
two sessions in 1995 and 1998 respectively and in
both cases the accompanying musicians are top
class. Kenny Davern and Allan Vaché play
clarinets with Davern expectedly gaining the edge.
Trombonist Joel Helleny shows his class on his
feature "Big Butter and Egg Man", and it is good
to hear the expertise of such fine pianists as
Mark Shane and Johnny Varro. It is notable that
the recent Armstrong tributes have all been
constructive and not simply derivative. This is
another good one. --Steve Voce

Review of You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand by  feralwolf

Advantages: New Different tracks, as well as the classic old style from Franz Ferdinand
Disadvantages: Takes a while to enjoy and appreciate. Not as good as first album.

...The success of the first album, entitled Franz Ferdinand, was groundbreaking. The group from Glasgow, UK, even found success in the most difficult market for European artists, the US. The first album was fantastic, and I personally am still quite happy to sit down and have a good listen to it one year on. All this is fantastic and great, but what about the new album, You Could Have It So Much Better. Firstly I would like to note that I purchased this album through the iTunes Music Store, as due to this cannot review the packaging, however from what I can fathom, I purchased the standard edition version, with extra track, Do You Want To (Live), exclusive to iTunes. Anyway, back to the review. TRACK 1 - The Fallen - ***** This is a brilliant opening track, it even in some respects surpasses the original albums greats... Read review

"You Could Have It So Much Better" (literally)
Review of You Could Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand by  RockBoi

Advantages: half the album
Disadvantages: .....half the album

...albums, has evidently improved. That said, 'What You Meant' sags into mediocrity, one that any other band may well have done a better job of, but then again, may not have. 'I'm Your Villain' sees the amps ever so slightly turned up, producing undoubtedly the hardest track of the album, and the most departed from the indie scene for which Franz themselves populate; ("If I could laugh I'd love you, If I could smile at anything you said. We could be laughing lovers, I think you'd prefer to be miserable instead"), whilst the breezy, punchy title track 'You Could Have Had It So Much Better' acts as a representation for the bands improvement (in my ears). Vocally, Kopranos shows significant improvement here, and it wouldn't be an understatement to say that I'd actually 'like' the band if this became their signature sound; ("As I look at us now... Review of South Park - Bigger Longer And Uncut - Original Soundtrack by  Desolate_Cash

Advantages: A prime example of american teen youth, trust us british to follow suit. A laugh a minute, Who said toilet humour was dead?!
Disadvantages: Erm, well, every *bleep* other *bleep* word *bleep* is a *bleep* cursive *bleep* word. And i dont mean hell, damn or Bugger. ;)

...Broflovski "Graphic violence is ok, as long as people don’t say any naughty words, that’s what this war is all about. 5)KYLES MUMS A B**CH- Cartman re sings that classic that we all enjoyed from the first series, only this time, its Bigger, Longer and Uncut. And as expected, Sheila finally catches him, and boy does he regret it. 6) WHAT WOULD BRIAN BOITANO DO? - Although many of you will have never even heard of Brian Boytano, I have don a bit of research and it turns out that he is an American Ice skater- I bet you didn’t no that. The song is merely placed in there for no reason whatsoever and has absolutely no relevance at all to the story line, my advice is, don’t ask. It’s got a very catchy tune though. 7) UP THERE- This portrays Satan’s sensitive side and lets face it, none of us expected him... Read review
