Advantages: Impressive performance of interesting opera at an unbeatable price

...Introduction: There simply isn't anything to beat the adrenalin shot of being one of maybe 120 people on stage performing some major musical masterpiece in front of a hopefully packed house. Orchestral playing is totally addictive! So when I was recently asked to play in the 2nd violin section of the orchestra for a weekend opera workshop, I didn't have to hesitate before saying yes. I was told it would involve around 15 hours of rehearsal from a Friday evening to Sunday morning, followed by a concert performance of the entire opera. Loads of playing = lots of fun! The opera in question was Alexander Porfir'yevich Borodin's "Prince Igor". Since I didn't know the opera apart from the famous Polovtsian Dances, I thought it might be good to get a CD of it before going to the weekend. Whilst my sight-reading is pretty good... Read review

It Was All Riot On The Night
Review of Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring; Petrushka by  Floon

Advantages: Music of tremendous power and excitement
Disadvantages: You could annoy the neighbours

...of musical history took a sudden lurch in a new direction. And it caused a riot. The event promised to be a pleasant evening out at the ballet at the Champs-Elysees Theatre in Paris. A young composer, Igor Stravinsky, already popular through his ballet music for The Firebird and Petrouchka, had written a new ballet, Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring.). The great Ballets Russes, formed four years earlier by Sergei Diaghilev, was to perform the ballet and a large audience turned up, looking forward no doubt to a charming, colourful spectacle and to some wonderful Russian music. Stravinsky had, after all, been a pupil of the great Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, a composer of highly colourful music including Sheherazade and The Flight of the Bumblebee. Gruberova is the Dream Beatrice!

Advantages: Bellini's music. Gruberova, Kasarova, Bernardini
Disadvantages: Morosow

...Among the Bellini operas, Beatrice di Tenda may not be as compelling musically as Norma or La Sonnambula, but it contains some of bel canto's most beautiful tunes and one of the most beautiful trio ever written. THE STORY: Filippo, the Duke of Milan, is married to Beatrice, but covets her lady in waiting Agnese. He plots to get his wife out of the way by accusing her of having an affair with Orombello (whom Agnese loves, but who is in love with Beatrice). Agnese backs the false charge, thinking that if she can't have Orombello then she doesn't want Beatrice to have him either. A few changes of heart follow in the course of the opera, but Beatrice is the constant good gal who gains a moral victory at the price of her own head.
