Advantages: Reasonable puzzle game Disadvantages: Limited long-term interest
Igor is a puzzle and adventure type game for the Nintendo DS, loosely based on the film of the same name.
The game starts with a small tutorial to get you used to the controls, but the game is sometimes quite cryptic in a confusing rather than challenging sense. The aim is to solve puzzles whilst collecting items to progress through the game. I found the whole progression through the game rather clumsy, sometimes not entirely sure where I was going and for what purpose.
There is also a fighting element to the game where you have to play a Tetris type mini-game in order to win the fight and progress. By getting blocks together you are able to beat off your monster opponents and perform different moves, which is interesting for a while, but not the basis of a fighting game given how many times this has to be done.
The plot is really to ...
Advantages: Superb production, fascinating footage, great music Disadvantages: None whatsoever apart from wanting more
others. Some of the conductors featured are Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Thomas Beecham, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Richard Strauss, Leopold Stokowski and Bruno Walter to single out a few names.
Right from the opening of the documentary you realise the high quality of the production values on this DVD as Beethoven's 5th Symphony segues seamlessly between different performances by very different conductors. Hearing the same piece conducted by Toscanini, von Karajan, Klemperer and Szell heightens the contrasts between the styles and interpretations of each of these highly individual maestri.
One of the big plus-points of this DVD is that along with copious extracts from performances and rehearsals, one is given complete performances of several works including Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" conducted by Serge Koussevitzky ...
Advantages: Some decent vocal performances and some nice gags. Disadvantages: The animation can't compete with Pixar and Disney.
Having been born in the kingdom of Malaria, hunchback Igor has only one choice of job; servant to a mad scientist. But all he wants to do is invent. So after his master blows himself up, Igor starts on his invention for the Mad Science Fair. He knows if he can create life, he will win for sure, but only if he can keep his plan secret. If he is caught inventing, he will be sent to the Igor Recycling Plant and be chopped up for spare parts. The only people he can count on are a suicidal immortal rabbit called Scamper and a dim-witted brain in a jar. However he soon discovers it isn't creating life that matters, but what you do with it?
This is Anthony Leondis' second film as a director and to be fair, it isn't a bad sophomore effort. Admittedly it doesn't rank up there with the likes of Disney and Pixar for quality of animation ...
