Miles Davis's famous mid-1960s quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist ... more
Herbie Hancock, was intact until just a few weeks before his new, electric ensemble recorded In a Silent Way. Legendary as a kind of line in the sand challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, In a Silent Way hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early 1970s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass and rekindled the tonal palette that Davis had explored famously with Kind of Blue. But In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient colour exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Davis takes many long, breathy solos, and they glisten in a burnished blue against his new group's strange admixture of musical moods. --Andrew Bartlett

Advantages: Excellent Jazz Album. Disadvantages: None!
a little bit of everything included and each song holds also, some fantastic memories for me, about my Grandparents, when I was growing up. They both used to dance around a lot to this CD and those memories of this music are happy ones to me that make me smile to myself when I think about this. I love listening to this album a lot and not because I am a huge jazz fan or anything, but because my Grandparents and all these songs, really mean a lot to me.
This Birth of cool CD was re-mastered in 1998, as it originally was on a LP and sounded a bit crackly. Well this newer version is not perfect either, but it sure is a lot better sound quality than before. A further remake of this album called ?Thecomplete Birth Of Cool is now also available with lots more added tracks by MilesDavis and it sounds great.

the song with little sharp notes before it sails into solo mode.
16. Hound Dog ****
This is one track that you can tell was one of the more enjoyable to record, with a basic instrumental backing sat next to blasts of dog impersonations by Mitch and Noel, which make the track more of a joke, and as such lose the musicianship of it, but still makes it a great listening in terms of the fun factor. The lyrics themselves seem often off-the-cuff, altering the original and adding in parts when the barking becomes insistent and the guitar really kicks in.
18. Hear My Train A Comin? *****
If there was one track that I would have liked a completely polished studio rendering, it would have been this (and Valleys Of Neptune), as it was played so often during live performances at such a high level that it deserved. I do own a few studio renderings, this ...
Advantages: Beautiful and relaxing. An outstanding band. Disadvantages: A little short.
This 1969 MilesDavis effort was one of his first explorations of electric sounds, and it would have been understandable if he had stopped after this outstanding album. It is short, clocking in at only forty minutes, but what a forty minutes it is. The music has a great feeling of space and relaxation, and it has an ambient feel. This does not detract from the fine solo work that Miles, Wayne Shorter and the rest of the band, however. Tony Williams is in particularly fine form on the drum kit, and John McLaughlin's guitar work is sublime. If you have never experienced Miles' electric period before, this would be a perfect starting point, since it is groundbreaking without being overly challenging, like Bitches Brew. ...

Album Notes
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came centre stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation. Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of colour and counterpoint. The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the inner tension in each of the extended pieces--Miles' "Shhh/Peaceful" and Zawinul's "In A Silent Way/It's About Time". Newcomer John McLaughlin's lyric, sitar-like guitar sets a serene mood on "Shhh", as bassist Dave Holland and drummer Williams essay a pulsating vamp. Miles' open horn is nuanced and graceful, combining long notes and cracked speech-like tones into one of his classic melodic statements, followed by McLaughlin's dancing figures and Wayne Shorter's chanting soprano. The title tune is a dark, dreamy, aquatic tone poem that breaks into an irresistable blues vamp. IN A SILENT WAY is one of Miles most sublimely beautiful, enduring creations.
