As many of you may have seen Jack Johnson is being touted as the Bob Dylan of the twenty first century. In my opinion this is a complete untruth. Jack Johnson can sing! This is bound to be a slightly controversial view but in my opinion Bob Dylan was rubbish! Ok he was a great lyricist, but his singing was dreadful. This is however just my opinion and not one to be judged in this review. I'm just trying to convey how much I like Jack Johnson and his music. In Between Dreams is Jack Johnson's third album after 'On and On' and 'Brushfire Fairytales'. However, this is the only one of his three albums to really get any attention in the UK. I'm sure that many of you are aware of the adverts on TV proclaiming that he is the best thing since sliced bread and about to explode onto the UK music scene. Well for once the TV is not lying to you! Jack Johnson comes from Hawaii and has devoted much of his life to surfing and surf culture. After a bad surfing accident several years ago he devoted himself to making and directing surf movies. He also composed the music for many of these movies and it was for this music rather than his movies that he was discovered. I must admit I'm a late comer to the Jack Johnson fan club and only really heard of him when I was out in Germany a few weeks ago visiting friends. It seems that Jack is a major figure over there and my German friends couldn't get enough of him. I expected it to be dreadful. We all know the hilarious stereotypes about German musical tastes, David Hasselhoff being the prime example. However, I must admit I was pleasantly suprised. Jack Johnson is great! His music is very similar to Bob Dylan in a folkey sort of way. It has a very laidback style and is perfect for a summer's day sitting in the sun. As you could expect from a native of Hawaii it is extremely relaxed and has a very fun element to it. Many of the songs are whimsical and ooze fun. It is clear that the process of making this album was a lot of fun and the music on it just makes me want to smile! I can highly recommend Jack Johnson, it's perfect for lazy summer days and is guaranteed to cheer you up! The majority of tracks are great and you can't help but tap your feet and sing along! The only downside is that some of the tracks sound very similar and it can be quite repetitive. However, with 15 tracks to choose from everyone will find something to suit there taste! I got my copy of In Between Dreams on CDwow.com for just under £9, plus free P&P! It's retailing for between £10 and £13. Woolworths is probably your best bet at £9.95! You can obtain Jack Johnson's past two albums on amazon.co.uk or amazon.com.
