The In Sound from Way Out.

Before I go into the review, let me give you a little history on the Beastie Boys for those not familiar with their greatness:

Beastie Boys came together in 1979 as a punk band called The Young Aborigines. In 1981 Adam Yauch (MCA) joined the group and changed the name to Beastie Boys. The name \"Beastie\" originally stood for \"Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence,\" and the initials B.B. intended to mimic Washington DC punk band Bad Brains. The band\'s original line-up consisted of Adam Yauch on bass, Kate Schellenbach on drums, John Berry on guitar, and Michael Diamond (Mike D) on vocals. Their first gig was at Berry\'s house on Yauch\'s 17th birthday. The band quickly earned support slots for Bad Brains, the Dead Kennedys and Reagan Youth at venues such as CBGB and Max\'s Kansas City, playing at the latter venue on its closing night. That same year, the Beastie Boys recorded the 7\" EP Pollywog Stew at 171A studios.

John Berry left the group (later forming Thwig) and was replaced by Adam Horovitz (Ad-rock)-who had previously played in the punk band, The Young and the Useless in 1983. The band also performed its first rap track, Cooky Puss, based on a prank call by the group to Carvel Ice Cream. The song became a hit in New York underground dance clubs upon its release.

The In Sound from Way Out was released on 2nd April 1996 but recording started on it from 1992. The total legnth of the album is 38 minutes and 30 seconds

One of the Beastie Boys most infamous Instrumental compilation albums to date From the In Sound from Way Out. Whilst I'm listening to it right now I understand why. The Beasties are probably best known for their, what I think worst song of all time, Fight for your Right. This album shows the amazing talent they have with song writing. As the album has no lyrics you get to appreciate the music and the group alot more.

The first track Groove Holmes (from the original album Check your Head for instance has quite a Jazzy, lift-me-upy feel to it and really gets you set for the rest of the album.

Sabrosa (track 2 from the orginal album Ill Communication) has a fantastic 80s cop show feel to it reminicent to that od Kojac! lol

Nameste (track 3 from the original album Check your Head) has quite a dark feel to it, it reminds me of Enter the Dragon (bruce lee).

Pow (track 4 from the original album Check your Head) is a bit more hard hitting with fantastic bass playing.

Son of Neckbone (track 5 orginally from the Sureshot album) is a lot more chilled.

In 3s (also from Check your Head) is quite jumpy and again the bass playing is fantastic, it really lifts your mood ready for a night out.

Eugene's Lament (from Ill Communication) is a very smooth and winding track, very oriental in theme and features what I think may be a violin or Asian instrument. It's quite plucky in places but very good to listen to.

Bobo on the Corner (from Ill Communication) is quite a fast paced track with a good drum beat. It makes you feel like you're on the run!

Shambala (track 9 originally from Ill Communication also) has quite a Tibetan theme and I believe the Beasties actually met the Dhali Lama which gave them the inspiration to write Ill Communication. You'll find alot of the tracks on Ill Communication follow this theme.

Lighten Up (from Check your Head) is a bit weird, with some moaning and groaning appearing throughout the track. Never the less, a quality track with excellent Bass.

Ricky's Theme (from Ill Commication) follows track 10 Lighten Up in it's sombre mood but very easy to listen to.

Both Transitions and Drinking Wine are similar to Lighten Up in their mood. Drinking Wine is quite awkward to listen to and spins my head a little as it sounds as though it's being played backwards. I actually think it might be!

Overall, the album is spot on. I'd reccomend this album to anyone who has preconceptions about the Beastie Boys as a funny Hip-hop band with amusing lyrics as it really does open your eyes to their long standing talent.
