This album has already had two reviews on this site, but simply to confirm what has already been said I feel the need to write again.
This album is a incredible gift to human ears. Its a concept album, based on the inspiration that lead song writer and vocalist Jeff Mangum got having read Anne Franks Diary. Mangums swelling vocals which are full of such feeling and depth are what really make the album what it is. The lyrics of course help - 'In the aeroplane over the sea' is a lyrical masterpiece.
The title track 'In The Aeroplane Over the Sea' is the best known song from the album and makes direct reference to Anne Frank 'There are lights in the clouds Anna's ghost all around/hear her voice as its rolling and ringing through me'. Mangum seems to be singing right from the heart.
The album has other gems in 'Holland 1945', 'Oh Comely' and 'Communist Daughter' each of which are just as inspirational. It is no mistake that so many bands around today list Neutral Milk Hotel as one of their major influences. In terms of simple song and lyric writing, Jeff Mangum has worked wonders.
I cannot possibly recommend this album enough. If you want to hear someone truly singing from the heart about something with meaning, buy this album.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
I find this review a bit too short for my taste. Is this an album that focusses on the lyrics, then; or can it be listened to just for the sake of the music as well?
Advantages: Incredibly moving, truly beautiful in both lyrics and texture. Disadvantages: Could be difficult to get into, not going to be a family favourite.
