The biggest problem with the piece is the excessive claims made for it as program music ... more
in the overly effusive liner notes. Some of the sections have clear roots in church music; others have only the most tenuous relation. And while some motifs are carried over from piece to piece, the 21 sections and sub- sections make more sense as discreet compositions than as one large work. That said, it must be added that these 21 tunes are for the most part exceptional. Marsalis comes up with striking melodic themes and then finds marvelously imaginative ways to harmonize each figure. Moreover, his musicians--especially saxophonist Todd Williams and trombonist Wessell Anderson--are skilled enough that Marsalis's own trumpet solos don't stand out as isolated peaks. If you can ignore the exaggerated claims made for the extended work, you would be hard put to find a better jazz band playing better music.--Geoffrey Himes

Advantages: I love Phil & Fern, some great news pieces & celebrity interviews. Disadvantages: Fern is leaving :( Sometimes their laughter can get a little too much!
ThisMorning is a light entertainment programme that is shown on ITV1 during weekday mornings and has been on TV for a number of years now.
It is currently hosted by Phillip Scofield and Fern Britton, however, Fern has recently announced that she will be leaving the show in July on her birthday to spend more time with her family. Phil will be staying on and there will be a new replacement arranged for Fern (the rumour mill is running wild at present).
The show talks about a variety of topics and has quite a few features throughout the week dealing with various issues such as finances, health, etc and they will have some quite hard hitting interviews with people suffering from financial difficulties, sickness, unemployment etc. They also run a daily competition which normally has a large cash prize or something like a car ...
Advantages: loads of variety Disadvantages: Denise Robertson
Reading another Ciao member's opinion on ThisMorning inspired me to add my own thoughts on the subject.
This programme has gone from strength to strength. Originally the set was based in The Albert Dock in Liverpool and as this is my home town, it was very easy to jump in the car and spend an idle day there, especially during the summer holidays. It was really amusing watching people standing around and peering into the large smoked glass windows at Richard & Judy (we never did of course!!!)Although on the television the windows looked clear, they were actually very dark and it was rather difficult to see into the studios from outside. I am sure people didn't realise how funny they looked on screen, squinting and straining to see what was going on.
We would watch Fred on his British Isle, jumping from region to region. It was ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of ITV: This Morning
Advantages: Informative Disadvantages: Not really aimed at men
they show you clothes for the average sized and shape woman out there, from shops that are affordable rather than costly and designer wear. Clothes for babies have also been covered by John Scott by all accounts you can tell he puts a lot of hard work and research into the items he brings to your TV screen.
ThisMorning have also made some individuals very happy by giving make overs to those who want a change or some one has nominated them for a makeover.
The antiques part of the show usually consists of three members of the public having to guess how much their item went at auction gambling the money their offered for the item or sticking with it. Quite a popular category in TV today so its only obvious a magazine programme would cover antiques.
Soap Gossip, this part for me is one of my favorites I love to know what ...

Album Notes
Wynton Marsalis Septet: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Todd Williams (soprano & tenor saxophones); Wessell Anderson (alto saxophone); Wycliffe Gordon (trombone); Eric Reed (piano); Reginald Veal (bass); Herlin Riley (drums). Additional personnel: Marion Williams (vocals). Recorded at BMG Studio A, New York, New York on May 28 & 29, 1992 and March 20 & 21, 1993. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. Commissioned in 1992 by Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis' IN THIS HOUSE, ON THIS MORNING combines Afro-American church music, blues and 19th century program music in a way which somehow simultaneously highlights the intrinsic similarities and the equally vast differences between these three disparate styles. Structured as a church service, from "Devotional" to "Benediction," with "Pot Blessed Dinner" serving as a homey, relaxed coda in the manner that Sunday dinner follows the service, IN THIS HOUSE, ON THIS MORNING never strays far from its sacred roots. At the same time, however, the album manages to interpolate influences as varied as Jelly Roll Morton and Johann Sebastian Bach. In much the same way as Duke Ellington's orchestral suites, Marsalis' extended piece combines the personal and the cultural in new and innovative ways.
Album Reviews
New York Times (1/5/95, p.C15) - Included on Peter Watrous' list of the Top 10 Albums Of '94 - "...Ambitious and learned, filled with Mr. Marsalis' distinct musical vocabulary." Q (10/94, p.122) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...his most ambitious project to date, and his Septet are now sufficiently banded to cope with the complicated charts and important spaces for improvisation that characterise the work..."
